itâs best to go with an insult or two. âI donât even know the guy. With my luck heâs a sociopathic psycho and a sexual deviate all in one, and Iâll end up regretting this.â
I hope not.
âDes, not all guys are like Denny.â
âEasy for you to say, youâve got Ari.â Theyâve been together for over a year and he still treats her like a queen.
âYeah and while Iâm living in Shepparton I have a boyfriend I can only see on the weekends.â She sounds a bit down.
âYou okay, Rick?â
âIgnore me, Des. Iâm just shitty with work.â
âWhatâs up? Tell me.â Ricki rarely lets work get to her. This must be big.
âNothing, Des. Donât worry about it. Get ready for your hot date.â
âShut up smart arse and tell me. Iâve got plenty of time.â
âI got a transfer.â
Oh, God, where are they sending her now? First the bush, now where? The Simpson Desert?
âYou will not believe where.â
Oh, jeez, how many hours will I have to drive this time? âHurry up and tell me already.â She knows that I am not a very patient person.
âOcean Grove.â
All right, this has potential. âWhen? Rick, this is great. Make sure you rent a place near the beach.â We must have our priorities straight.
âIâm supposed to start there in three weeks.â Something in her voice gives away that sheâs not as excited about this as I am.
âWhatâs wrong, Rick?â She should be jumping for joy at this move. Ocean Grove compared to Shepparton is a no-brainer. This is second only to her coming home. âOcean Grove will be great! Itâs close to Melbourne, beautiful ocean air, cute surfer boys to liven up the natural sceneryâ¦â
âI just thought the next transfer would be back home. Jeez, Des, Iâve paid my dues.â She has a point. Sheâs been out at Shepparton for over a year now. It must be hell on her relationship with Ari. It would be a bit hard to keep the momentum up with a two-and-a-half-hour drive between you and your boyfriend. âIâm too far away from everyone. I wasnât there when you needed me. My parents didnât tell me my mum had her appendix out until it was all over.â
âThey didnât want to worry you. They knew youâd jump in the car and drive straight home in the middle of the night.â
âYeah, well, no-one wants to worry me and I feel fucking useless.â
She has got to see something positive in this move. âAt least this time youâre only about an hour away. With the freeways itâll seem like youâre right next door. Youâll be able to spend more time with Ari and youâll be closer to everyone.â
âI guess youâre right.â And thereâs another positive that Ricki really should focus on.
âAnd youâll have the beach. Iâll come up this weekend and we can scour RealEstate.com and find you a place to rent by the beach.â
âAre you kidding? You are so in lust all youâll want to do this weekend is be with Chrissy-boy making kissy kissy lovey dovey faces at each other.â
âShut up, bitch. I am not in lust.â Liar liar pants on fire. âBesides, this is so much more important.â
âAriâs driving up Friday night if you want to get a lift with him. And if you canât bare to be away from lover boy you can always invite him up.â I donât think so. And I think I will drive myself. Ari and I may kill each other given that he wonât let me smoke in his car. Two and a half hours in a car without a smoke? Not going to happen.
âYouâre so funny. I gotta go.â Iâve got to start getting ready. Itâs almost six-thirty and Iâm still standing here in my bra and undies.
âCall me when you get home, Des. I want all the gossip.â
Oh,
