real dog.
âHeâll sleep for at least an hour now,â she said. âMaybe more, given the tranquilizer.â
But he was still focused on the earlier conversation. âYouâve read everything? You really are a fan, arenât you?â
She lifted her gaze again. It was a little bit soft, as if he were seeing behind the mask she wore. âIâm more than a fan.â
Alarm bells went off. Was she an obsessed fan? A stalker type? God, that would be an added complication, wouldnât it? She didnât seem like that kind, though. âHow do you mean?â he asked, his tone cautious.
She shrugged. âIf you really feel the way your character Harvey does about life and love and loneliness, then I feel more like aâ¦a kindred spirit, I guess.â
âAnd if I donât?â
âThen I guess Iâm only a kindred spirit to Harvey.Either way, you must understand him. Identify with him.â
âSo it stands to reason I would understand and identify with you.â He nodded. âIâve got to read some of my books.â
âI anticipated that, brought some of them along. We can take turns driving if you want to read a little.â She blinked then, as if sheâd just thought of something. âYou didnât forget how to drive.â
âI didnât even think about that.â He looked at his hands on the wheel and nodded. âIt was kind of automatic, getting into the driverâs seat. It didnât even occur to me that I might not know how.â He felt himself smiling and realized it was the first time since waking up without a past.
âMaybe everything you ever knew is still right there, inside your mind,â Olivia said. âMaybe it just hasnât quite surfaced.â
He nodded. âI hope youâre right about that.â
âSoâ¦when do you think it would be safe for me to make those calls? Not that Iâm asking permission, of course.â
âOf course. My suggestion, â he said, âwould be to wait until we can pick up a new phone or two. The prepaid ones would be harder to trace.â
âSo we need to stop somewhere.â
He nodded. âOnce itâs daylight. And only if we can get access to some cash. If we use plastic, theyâll trace us.â
âWell, even I knew that much,â she said. âBut I thinkyou might be a little overly cautious here, Aaron. Itâs highly unlikely anyone is even looking for us yet.â
âOh, trust me. Theyâre looking. Those nurses are pretty diligent about waking up patients every hour or so. Mostly to tell them to get some sleep.â
She smiled a little at that.
âBesides, we already know someone is looking. Maybe not the police, not yet. But my shooterâs looking for me, and your housebreaker is looking for you. Thereâs no question about that. And we donât know how sophisticated these men areâassuming theyâre not the same man.â
âOr how sophisticated the guys who hired them are.â
He frowned. âYou think someone hired that man to break in to your house, donât you? And you have a good idea who.â
Her face went serious, and she gave a nod. âI can get us plenty of cash.â
âATM?â
She frowned at him. âWouldnât they, whoever they are, pick up on that faster than they would be able to track a cell phone?â she asked, and he wasnât sure if it was just him, or if she was starting to sound a little impatient. âAnd wouldnât it look fairly suspicious if I took a big chunk of cash out of the bank on the same night you went missing?â
âSee? Even youâve read a few thrillers.â
âI read widely. Iâm an English professor, after all.âAnd then the stuffy facade wavered a little. âAnd I watch the occasional episode of Law and Order .â
He glanced over at her, caught her sheepish expression as she
