hopeful about tonight.” I made the announcement when I stepped out the door to my waiting entourage of pains in the ass.
When we’d conversed with Robert and the other misfits last time this was the date they’d given us for the pick up. Now with the money gone, and them knowing who knows what, since we had to wait for Vanessa to bring Rosalind in to tell us what she’d told them, we were just going just in case.
They’d be dumb fucks if they showed up tonight and we’d already decided they weren’t that. We know they hadn’t made the move already because we’d been keeping an eye out.
“Damn Lo, give it a rest already, you’re getting as bad as Connor, damn.” They were all trying hard not to grin behind their hands. “What the fuck are you talking about Ty?” Like I didn’t know, even when we were in the trenches these fucks were always talking shit, nosy fucks.
“Took a long nap did you brother?” Quinn can be part ass too when he wants to be, but I chose to ignore them all as we moved towards our bikes. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I hopped on my ride and waited for the rest of the gossip committee to do the same. “You never turned the lights on buddy, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out since no SEAL worth his salt would take a fucking nap in the evening.”
“Fuck you, fuck all of you, except maybe you Con.” That was only because he got as much shit as I did.
“He’s the one who started it.” I gave Con the stink eye after Zak’s announcement, but he held up his hand like he was innocent, somehow I didn’t believe him, could be the smirk he was trying hard but failing to hide. I guess it’s true what they say, misery loves company and his ass was tired of being the only one.
We did our thing, easing down to the street before the boardwalk, lights out. We left our rides in one of their hiding places, we never leave them in the same place all the time, too easy. There was no one around, the town was literally asleep and had been for a while now. There were distant lights farther away, probably porch lights and shit, but closer to the water there was nothing but dark.
“Feel how peaceful that is.” It’s one of those nights where the sky is a blanket of dark blue velvet, barely a star to be seen, no other brightness, but the light of the moon reflecting off the water. I could sit here with my girl and enjoy the cool breeze on a warm summer night, if some fuck wasn’t using my spot to run his illegal shit.
The shots came from above and went wide. My men were in motion already, as we hit the ground. “Are you fucking kidding me?” I didn’t have to speak, just with hand motions I sent Zak and Tyler around and behind where the shots had came from. The rest of us crawled on our bellies towards the boardwalk, staying in the bushes, guns drawn.
The shooter was on a side angle to the water, which means we were heading to cover but would still be in a position to take the fucker out if the others didn’t get them. “Alive.” I uttered the word into the watch I had on my wrist that doubled as a communication device.
There was another spate of gunfire, which seemed not to be aimed anywhere in particular, unless you were laying down fire to subdue. I looked at the others like ‘what the fuck!’
“Who the fuck do they have out there, Barney Fife?” There came the sound of running feet and tussling, followed by an expletive and a few thumps. Zak came striding back with a gift, which he thoughtfully dropped at my feet. What the fuck is this?” It was a damn kid.
“Who the fuck? What are you doing out here kid?” The boy couldn’t be more than seventeen, shaking like a leaf with terror in his eyes. I would feel sorry for his little ass if he hadn’t just taken shots at me.
“Were you the one shooting?” he nodded and looked around like he was about to shit himself. “Why?” I cold practically hear the kid’s bones rattling
