    “ Tell
daddy all about it,” Bain said soothingly as he filled up her
glass again.
    “ Shall
we start with the woman who was almost strangled by her husband and
her daughter had nowhere to go when the police came and arrested said
husband and brought the woman to the hospital? The daughter was
dragged away kicking and screaming by social services probably never
to be seen again. The mother will never speak again in her life.”
Meaghan said sadly.
    “ Ouch.
I don’t know why you got into medicine Megs. The worst thing
that happened at the construction site today was that two workers
were rough-housing, one guy fell through the floor and maybe sprained
his ankle.”
    “ Yeah
but you have to go to work wearing a hard hat coz a building might
fall on your head,” Meaghan countered.
    “ Maybe,
but most of the time I’m in my air conditioned office drawing
plans or meeting with clients. The hard hat is the only excitement I
see in my life,” Bain said.
    “ That,
and going to Daniel’s shows huh?” Meaghan reminded him.
    “ I
don’t know, I think I’m all strippered out, you know.
Getting old. It’s not half as exciting as it used to be. I just
do it for Danny now…mainly.”
    “ Really?
You don’t enjoy the ripped undulating bodies anymore?”
Meaghan teased.
    “ Well…”
Bain hedged and then they both laughed. They would talk about the
harder things; later during desert; when they’d ingested enough
wine to be free of what little inhibitions they had left. The tears,
if there were any to be shed, would come later, back at Bain’s
place. Tomorrow they’d wake up and go back to their lives
relieved and refreshed.
    Desert was tiramisu
and coffee spiked with alcohol and Meaghan was pleasantly buzzed.
    “ So
Dean wants to introduce me to his father,” she dropped the bomb
casually, making Bain sit up and open his mouth, for once, at a loss
for words.
    “ That
is huge,” he said at last.
    “ Don’t
I know it,” Meaghan replied. “Thoughts? Advice?”
she asked looking desperately at him.
    “ Be
yourself. He’ll love you,” Bain said at once.
    “ Very
helpful Bain,” she complained.
    “ Yeah,
I know it is. That’s what I’m here for,” Bain
swayed gently in his seat. He was a bit more than buzzed. His driver
was waiting outside though so no biggie.
    “ What
about you Bain? Are you taking Daniel home to meet the folks? You’ve
certainly been together like donkey’s years now,” she
said teasingly.
    Bain’s face
fell and he looked troubled and Meaghan’s brow furrowed in
concern.
    “ What
is it Bain?” she asked.
    Bain just shook his
head. “It’s nothing, I’m just…I guess I’m
in Dean’s boat right now; wondering how to go forward without
losing the people I love.”
    “ The
people you love,” Meaghan repeated softly. “And is Daniel
one of those?”
    “ I
think he is,” Bain said with a sidelong smile.
    “ Yay,
Bain is in love,” Meaghan sang.
    “ Oh
shut up,” Bain said but with good natured affection. “Shall
we move this party to my place?”
    “ Yeah.
Let’s,” Meaghan said standing up. “Lemme just visit
the lil girls’ room, I’ll be right with you.”
Meaghan took off with her bag to freshen herself and Bain lifted his
hand for the waiter so he could settle the bill. He looked up and was
surprised to see Luigi looking down at him. The look in his eye
was…strange.
    “ Forgive
me,” he said.
    “ For
what?” Bain asked.
    “ Eavesdropping,”
Luigi said staring Bain straight in the eye.
    “ Why?”
Bain asked.
    “ Why
what?” Luigi asked.
    “ Why
were you eavesdropping?” Bain asked impatiently.
    Luigi sighed. “I
do that sometimes. It’s the only way I can seem to get any
information out of you. When you’re talking to Meaghan. Do you
talk to anyone else so openly?” he sounded wistful.
    Bain stared at him.
“I don’t know what you mean,” he said coldly.
    “ No.
I guess you would not,” Luigi said looking sad about it.
    “ Why
do
