C ARROT H ILL
âAll right, boys and girls.â Ms. Mabel, the head of Carrot Hill Nursery School, clapped her hands. âAnyone who has to use the bathroom, hold up two fingers, please.â
âHow will that help?â Oliver said.
Arthur laughed. Oliver held up two fingers and waved them around. Then he bopped Arthur on the head to show he wanted to be friends.
Everyone giggled.
âWe are here to learn, class,â Ms. Mabel said. âTo write our names and to be responsible people. To go down the slide and to draw.â She paused and looked around the room. âA show of hands, please. How many of you have a pet?â
Arthur held up his hand and said, âI have a pet fish. She sleeps in her tank and sometimes she lets me pet her.â
Oliver held up his hand.
âAll right, Oliver,â Ms. Mabel said patiently. âTell us about your pet.â
âI have a dog and her name is Edna. Her hair is the same color as mine,â Oliver said. âWhen Iâm five, Iâm going to be a hero.â
The class rustled like leaves in the fall. Somebody burped.
Oliver burped back.
âYes, well, Edna is a lovely name,â Ms. Mabel said. âMy motherâs name was Edna.â
Oliver bopped Arthur on the head again.
âOrder, please, boys and girls.â Ms. Mabel frowned. âWe are here to learn to shake hands and to look the person weâre shaking hands with straight in the eye.â
âBoys donât shake hands,â Oliver said.
âThatâs what you think,â Ms. Mabel said.
A girl with pigtails held up her hand. âI have a pet pig named Pig,â the girl said. Oliver pulled one of her pigtails and the girl bopped Oliver on the head to get even.
That was pretty much how the first day at Carrot Hill Nursery School went.
After that things went downhill fast. One wet and windy Wednesday, Ms. Mabel reached the end of her rope. She had had it. Plus, she had a terrible head cold and felt something awful.
When Oliver and Arthur started in with the bops again, Ms. Mabel knew what she had to do.
âI hab ward you ab ward you to stop the bopping,â Ms. Mabel said. âWod of you bust go. We bust hab order in Carrot Hill. We will draw straws. The wod who gets the short straw bust go.â
Oliver got the short straw.
âOliver bust go,â said Ms. Mabel sadly, for she liked all the boys and girls at Carrot Hill.
âGo where?â Oliver said.
âOud.â Ms. Mabel pointed to the door.
âBut I just got here,â Oliver said. Nevertheless he packed his backpack and never looked back.
âWhere did I go wrong?â Oliverâs mother cried. âHeâs only four and already heâs a dropout. Whatâs to become of him? Poor little Oliver.â
âPoor little Oliver my foot,â said Oliverâs dad. âHeâs no dropout, heâs a kickout. Give the kid a break. Heâs young, heâll learn. Iâll lay odds on Oliver any day in the week.â
âBut he was in the top ten percentile!â Oliverâs mother cried. âBrainwise, that is. Which would look very, very good on his resumé.â
âWhat does odds mean?â Oliver asked.
âIt means Iâll put my money on you anytime, Ol,â said his dad. âIt means youâre a winner in my estimation.â
Oliver listened carefully. Two words caught his attention. One was money and the other was winner .
His mouth stretched as wide as any Halloween pumpkinâs and his spiky orange hair fairly crackled and his freckles seemed to march across his nose like a trail of ants in search of the sugar bowl.
âOdds on me!â Oliver shouted, full of joy. âOdds on me!â
