bacon and eggs
. She hadnât recognized the voice. It was disguised to sound like a cranky old lady.
Later when she came to dinner, everybody made a point of telling her how pretty she looked.
âYouâre going to break a lot of hearts someday,â said her brother Dan.
âYou get prettier every time I see you,â said Sue.
Even Rebecca got in the act. âYouâre the prettiest of all my aunts and uncles,â she said. âYouâre much prettier than Sheila!â
âKnock it off, okay?â said Laura. She didnât carewhether or not she was pretty!
George Washington didnât worry about whether or not a girl would ever want to kiss him. That was probably a good thing, too, Laura thought. What girl would want to kiss somebody with wooden teeth?
The fire returned to her eyes. Pig City was going to war!

Monkey Town
âBacon and eggs?â asked Gabriel.
Karen laughed.
âSorry, Gabe,â said Howard.
âPigs donât lay eggs, Howard,â said Jonathan.
Howard was supposed to have called Laura and said, âMonkey Town will turn Pig City into bacon and ham.â That made sense. Bacon and ham come from slaughtered pigs.
Howard felt awful. He was so happy when Gabriel asked him to join the club, but now he messed up his first assignment. âI meant to say ham,â he explained. âItâs more natural to say âbacon and eggsâ than âbacon and hamâ. Itâs hard to say âbacon and ham.ââ
âBacon and ham. Bacon and ham. Bacon and ham,â said Sheila.
âYou want me to call her back, Gabe?â asked Howard. âI can call her back and tell her I meant ham.â
Karen laughed hysterically.
âThis is war, Howard,â said Gabriel. âWe canât callher back and say we made a mistake.â
âIt might be better this way,â said Jonathan. âTheyâre not just pigs. Theyâre chicken pigs! They lay eggs.â
Everyone laughed.
âThey still wonât know what âbacon and eggsâ means,â said Yolanda.
âThatâs all right,â said Gabriel. âOne of the first rules of war is to confuse the enemy. You did a good job, Howard.â
âI knew youâd like it,â said Howard. âThatâs why I did it.â
Sheila snorted.
âWeâll have to change our song,â said Yolanda. âWhat rhymes with eggs?â
âPegs,â said Jonathan.
âBegs,â said Karen.
âI think we should just tell Mr. Doyle that Lauraâs the one who wrote on the board,â said Sheila.
âWe canât,â said Gabriel. âI wrote on the board, too. I wrote âPigs Stink.â If she gets in trouble, we all will.â He would never have told on Laura, anyway, but he had to give a reason that would satisfy Sheila.
âThereâs more than one way to skin a pig,â he said. He stuck his right thumb in his right ear and wiggled the remaining fingers on that hand.
Everyone else did the same.
It was the secret Monkey Town salute.

Eye of the Hurricane
Laura walked to school Monday morning, alert, but not afraid. She didnât know who or what Monkey Town was, or what bacon and eggs meant. She was ready for anything.
She sneaked into the building and on through the yellow curtain into Mr. Doyleâs room. There was already a message on the board:
MONKEYS ARE
     MARVELOUS
          MAGNIFICENT
              AND MIRACULOUS!
She picked up the eraser and a piece of chalk. She didnât change it all, just enough.
She placed the eraser and chalk back on the rack, then walked calmly out through the school to the outside. She stood with her back against the brick wall so nobody could sneak up behind her, and waited for PigCity. Her eyes moved constantly.
Tiffany and Allison came walking across the
