blacktop. She went out to meet them and raised her fist to her nose.
Allison returned the salute. Tiffany didnât. Something was wrong. Tiffany looked very scared and confused.
Laura wondered if Monkey Town had gotten to her already. âAre you all right?â she asked.
âI donât know what to say to him!â Tiffany complained, pulling at her hair. âHow can I even look at him?â
âLook at who?â asked Laura.
âNathan!â Tiffany exclaimed. âWho else?â
Laura laughed.
Allison shrugged. âShe started out perfectly normal, or at least, normal for Tiffany. Then the closer we got to school, the crazier she got. Sheâs afraid to see Nathan, after you know, what they did.â
âItâs not funny!â Tiffany insisted. âTell me what to say to him, Laura.â
âI donât know,â Laura replied. â
I wouldnât understand
, remember?â
âJust talk to him like you always did,â said Allison. âSay what you used to say.â
âI canât remember what I used to say,â complained Tiffany.
Debbie and Kristin approached. Everyone saluted. Tiffany missed. Her fist hit her eye.
âDid anybody else get a call from Monkey Town?â Laura asked.
âMonkey Town?â questioned Debbie.
Laura told them about the phone call.
âBacon and eggs?â asked Kristin. âWhat does that mean?â
âI donât know,â said Laura. âBut it doesnât sound good.â
Tiffany gasped.
Everyone turned around.
It was Nathan. He and Aaron were approaching. Nathanâs face was as red as a beet.
They all saluted. Tiffany punched herself in the nose.
âHi, Tiffany,â said Nathan.
âHi, Nathan,â said Tiffany.
âHi,â said Nathan. âHowâs your hamster?â
âFine, thank you,â said Tiffany, âand yours?â
âFine, thank you,â said Nathan, even though he didnât own a hamster.
Laura repeated her news about Monkey Town for Nathanâs and Aaronâs benefit. âWe all have to be very careful,â she warned.
As they lined up for class, Tiffany pulled Laura aside. âThat wasnât so bad, was it?â she said. âWetalked just like always.â
âI guess youâre both too busy worrying about Monkey Town to worry about each other,â said Laura.
âMonkey Town?â asked Tiffany. âWhatâs that?â
They went inside. Nobody laughed at the message on the blackboard. Nobody knew what it meant.
MONKEY ARE
    MARVELOUS
        MAGNIFICENT
           AND MUSTARD!
âMustard!â exclaimed Karen.
âIs something bothering you, Karen?â asked Mr. Doyle.
âUh, no, Mr. Doyle. Um, I donât like mustard.â
âDo you like ketchup?â he asked.
âItâs okay.â
âGood, Iâm glad you have something to put on your hot dog.â He erased the board and put the number 9 next to the rectangle under the word DICTIONARY.
âThereâs an egg in my desk!â Kristin announced.
Several kids laughed.
âKristin?â said Mr. Doyle.
She showed him the egg.
Laura found an egg in her desk, too. It washard-boiled, without the shell.
âHey, I got one, too,â said Aaron. He held up his egg.
âDoes anybody else have an egg?â asked Mr. Doyle.
Everybody looked inside his or her desk. Five people raised their hands and eggs: Debbie, Nathan, Tiffany, Allison, and Laura. The entire population of Pig City had been
egg-laid
.
They brought their eggs to Mr. Doyle. He asked them how the eggs got in their desks, but they all said they didnât know. They returned to their seats.
âAll right,â said Mr. Doyle. âWeâve had enough silliness for one morning. Now, I want to know where these eggs came from!â
Gabriel raised his
