Emily did, too. Spencer glanced around the room, seeing things for the very last time before they finally came clean about Tabitha. Before their lives, possibly, changed forever. But she knew it was the right thing to do. They were drowning by themselves. They needed help.
She leaned forward and gazed at Fuji. âLook. Weâre not saying that what we did was right, but we messed up, and weâre sorry about what we did. But there are reasons why we havenât come clean. And we do have more information on Tabitha, but we havenât been able to tell you.â
âWhy not?â Fuji asked sharply.
âBecause it hasnât been safe,â Spencer explained. âWeâre being threatened. What we know is really, really dangerous. So if we say something, we want something in return.â
âGo on.â Fuji folded her hands. âIâm listening.â
âWe need to make sure youâll keep us safe,â Spencer said firmly. âWe donât want anything to happen to us or our families.â
Fuji nodded. âAll right. We can arrange that.â
âAnd we also want our charges dropped. Everything we didâthe drugs, the theft, the secret communication with the fugitive, and the accidentâit needs to be wiped clean from our records.â
â Spencer!â Emily cried.
Aria covered her eyes.
But Spencer didnât apologize or renege the demand. She adopted the tactic she used when she used to play forward in field hockey: stare down your opponent during face-off. Donât let them see you sweat. Donât back down. âThatâs what we want. Can you do that for us?â
Fuji was the first to blink. âOkay. But whatever you have, it had better be good.â
Spencer took a breath. She hadnât thought Fuji would actually go for it.
Then she explained what they knew, including how theyâd accidentally pushed Tabitha off the balcony but didnât kill her. They couldnât tell anyone the truth, though, because of how it looked. And because someone was threatening them.
Agent Fuji tented her fingers. âSo thereâs another A?â
Emily glanced at the others. âMore than one, we think.â
Fuji folded her hands. âAnd who do you think your stalker might be?â
Again, everyone exchanged a glance. Aria cleared her throat. âAlison,â she said loudly.
Fuji widened her eyes. âI see .â
Spencer launched into an explanation of exactly why they thought A was Ali and how all the pieces fit. âWait a minute,â Agent Fuji interrupted, when they got to that part about Emilyâs baby. âYou think Alison killed Gayle Riggs?â
Spencer nodded.
Fuji squinted hard. âBut in the police notes, you girls said it sounded like A spoke to the person who shot her.â
âThatâs right,â Emily said. âWe heard Gayle talking to someone. Kind of like, What are you doing here? And then there was the shot.â
Fujiâs brow furrowed. âSo perhaps Gayle knew Alison?â
âMaybe,â Spencer said. âOr maybe she knew her helper.â
âDo you have any idea who her helper might be?â
The girls looked at one another. âWe had a lot of theories,â Spencer said. âGraham Pratt for a while. And then Noel Kahn.â
âNoel?â Fuji cocked her head. âWhat does he have to do with this?â
Spencer opened her mouth to explain, but Aria caught her arm. âIt was a false lead,â she said quickly. A look flashed across her face that said, Letâs not rat out Noel right now . Spencer just shrugged.
âThis is really, really serious, girls,â Fuji said. âWeâre talking about a serial killer. Iâm glad you finally came to me about thisâthereâs no way you can handle this on your own, and you shouldnât have to.â
No one spoke. Spencer held her breath.
âWith your permission,
