Summer a zillion questions about Connor and Cassandra. I just got to MidcoastâI shouldnât be this curious about anybody yet. But then, Connor isnât just anybody. Heâs probably the nicest boy Iâve ever met.
Yank .
Thereâs that tug on my stomach again, reminding me that the nicest boy Iâve ever met doesnât deserve to be lied to.

C ASSANDRA AND KATIE are already at breakfast by the time Summer and I come in. Cassandra calls us over even before we get in the cafeteria line. Summer waves to her as if she didnât hear a word she said, then she picks up a tray and hands it to me.
âSheesh. She can wait until we eat at least,â Summer says under her breath.
We get our scrambled eggs and potatoes and sit down with Cassandra and Katie.
âDid you talk to Connor at dinner last night?â Cassandraâs blotting her lip gloss on a napkin.
âNo, my parents were there the whole time.â
âSo?â Cassandra crosses her arms across her chest.
âMy parents donât want to hear that stuff.â Summer eats a forkful of potatoes.
âCan you talk to him today?â
âI dunno. Maybe,â Summer says. âIf thereâs a good time.â
âI want him to ask me to the Spring Fling.â Cassandra leans back in her chair.
âThereâs still almost a month and a half till the Spring Fling,â Summer says. âThatâs plenty of time.â
âWhat if he asks somebody else,â Cassandra says.
Summer laughs. âWhoâs he going to ask?â
âYou never know.â Cassandra glances my way for a split second, and my cheeks feel super hot.
âI promise you,â Summer says. âConnor isnât even thinking about the Spring Fling.â
âHow do you know?â Cassandra asks.
âI know him. Right now heâs probably thinking about the Sox.â
âHeâs thinking about his socks?â Cassandra twists her hair around her finger.
âDo you actually know anything about Connor?â Summer tears the crust off her toast.
âI know heâs hot,â Cassandra says. Katie giggles.
âHeâs a huge Red Sox fan and baseball season is starting,â Summer says. âThatâs the most important thing on his mind right now.â
âBaseball is so boring,â Cassandra says.
âI love baseball,â I say. The words slip out before I can stop them. My dadâs been captain of the Dodgers for over a decade. I was practically born in their dugout.
âBaseballâs pretty fun,â Summer says, and then turns to Cassandra. âMaybe you should get to know him a little better before deciding you want to go to the Spring Fling with him.â
âI know all I need to know.â Cassandra stands up, and Katie follows. âJust talk to him, okay?â
Summer sighs.
Cassandra smiles, her perfect teeth practically blinding me. âThanks, babe. TTYL,â she says, and glides out of the cafeteria.
Just as weâre about to clear off our trays, Connor walks in. He sits down next to Summer.
âHey,â he says. He looks at me first, for like a second, and then at Summer.
âOkay, so I have to ask you something.â Summer turns toward him.
âWhat?â Connor takes a sip of orange juice.
âCassandra wants you to ask her to the Spring Fling. Will you?â
Connorâs face looks like he just swallowed a lemon. Either his orange juice has gone bad, or he doesnât want to ask Cassandra out. Iâm hoping and praying the orange juice is fine.
âSeriously?â he says.
Summer raises her eyebrows.
âI donât like her,â he says.
I bite my lip to stop the gigantic smile creeping across my face.
âYeah, I figured, but I told her Iâd ask so Iâm asking.â
âShe wears way too much makeup.â Connor takes a bite of an egg sandwich. My hand instinctively
