introducing her to the director that when it was time to leave the office, he opened the door and backed into the guyâs private bathroom.
âDid you get the part?â Dennis asks.
Vee shakes her head. âI was so embarrassed, I could barely get through the audition. I never read for anything my husband wrote again.â
âSo youâre married.â
âSeparated. In fact, we split up the same day Ramon was murdered.â Which is the signal Dennis was waiting for to commence his interrogation.
âHow well did you know him? Ramon, I mean.â
Vee says she only knew him professionally, but he was a really good teacher and a charming guy.
âHe ever make a pass at you?â
Vee laughs. âRamon made a pass at everyone. Youâd be insulted if he didnât.â
âBut you didnât respond.â
âNo.â
âDo you know anyone who did?â
âOther than myself, Iâm not sure I know anyone who didnât.â
âDo you know Linda Paulson?â
âSure.â
âWhat about her?â
âAnd Ramon?â
âUh-huh.â
âI donât know. Yâknow, sheâs older, very attractive, but sheâs married to a very rich guy . . . If I had to take a guess . . .â Vee shrugs. âI donât know . . .â
âWhat was it that made Ramon so attractive to women?â
âYou always knew what the deal was with him. He always made you feel sexy, and he was totally clear it was just about sex, not about getting involved, and thatâs very appealing to a lot of women.â
âBut not to you.â
âI guess Iâm not that kind of girl,â Vee says, and Dennis is rewarded with a smile when he remarks that heâs glad she isnât.
âDid any of the women in your class talk about their relationship with Ramon, tell you any stories about him?â
âWhat kind of stories?â
âThat he was kinky for this or that, or he liked it rough?â
Vee shakes her head. âNo, nothing like that. But sometimes theyâd gossip about what a stud he was.â And she holds her hands about a foot apart to indicate the rumored size of Ramonâs dick.
Dennis grins, which tells Vee, among other things, that heâs not afflicted with penis envy. âAny jealousy you picked up on, or maybe a jealous husband or boyfriend you heard about?â
âIâm sorry, no.â
âDid he have any enemies that you knew of?â
Vee laughs, then says no.
âWhatâs so funny?â
âIâm sorry, but itâs like Iâm reading for a part in
Law and Order
or something, except itâs for real.â
âYâknow, itâs none of my business,â Dennis says, âbut I spoke to your agent, this Ari Goldstein guy, and he sounded kind of like an immature jerk.â
Vee laughs again. âAri Goldstein
is
an immature jerk. And heâs not my agent. Heâs my agentâs assistant.â
Now itâs Dennis who laughs. âGee, I guess he lied to me.â
âThereâs a shock,â Vee says.
An awkward silence then, as if there are no other questions to ask, but neither of them wants the conversation to end. Finally Dennis stands, signaling the interviewâs over. âThanks for coming in, Vee.â
âMy pleasure,â she says.
âI know this isnât strictly speaking professional of me, but would you consider going out with me sometime?â
Veeâs smile lights him up. âIâve never gone out with a policeman.â
âYou donât have to worry,â Dennis says. âIâm potty-trained.â
âThatâs a relief,â Vee says.
Out in the squad room, Dennis asks for Veeâs phone number, and she writes it for him on the back of her eight-by-ten. âIâm staying with a girlfriend in Hollywood till I figure out my life,â she says, âbut thatâs my
