said. âBut weâre not pulling Slater off lead vocals.â
âListen to the track.â Sam offered the disk to Derek.
Movement out the window had Calix turning around to see Dak slamming out of the studio. âWhereâs he going?â
With his messenger bag slung across his shoulder, Dak stormed down the driveway and disappeared around the side of the house.
âThrowing a tantrum,â Ben said. âBut at least weâre done for the day.â
Slater brought a laptop to the table. âLetâs give it a go.â
Derek inserted the disk. A few moments later, the music started, and Calix felt that same energy returning. It was a great song. Until the vocals kicked in. Slater definitely sounded a little strained.
Over the music, Terrence said, âSongâs in the wrong key.â
Slater shut off the music. âWhatâs that?â
âThis songâs in C sharp, right?â
Slater nodded.
âIsnât that too high for you?â
âYeah,â Slater said. âI told him that.â
âYou should try it in A.â
The guys looked at each other. A simple adjustment that Dak hadnât considered.
âLetâs change it,â Slater said.
âRight now?â Sam pulled out her phone, started texting. âI can see if heâll come back.â
âI donât give a shit if he comes back,â Derek said. âI want to hear it in A.â
Sam looked up from her phone. âYou want him back or not?â A text came in, and she opened it. âOh, wait. Thatâs him.â She read it. âOkay, heâs just talked to Irwin. He wants a listening party.â
Cooper slapped his hand on the counter. âFuck yeah.â
âAbout time,â Ben said. âLet Irwin hear the shit weâve been working on.â
âHow soon?â Derek asked Sam.
âSoon as we can get it together,â Sam said.
While the others continued talking, Calix cornered Mimi. âHow soon can you pull off a party?â
Those raspberry lips parted, and he wanted to nudge aside her hair with his nose and breathe in her sweet, sexy scent.
âI donât even know what a listening party is.â
âThis isnât for press or fans, so itâs nothing flashy. Weâre not showing anything off. Itâll just be people from the record company. Weâll keep it simple.â He shrugged. âLike a clambake.â
âA clambake? Calix, Iâve only ever been a guest at one of those. They should hire an event planner.â
âThe more opportunities you have to cook, the better. Cooking for an event, shit goes wrong, youâve got to improvise. Just like during the competition.â
The creases in her forehead relaxed, and she grinned. âWait a second. Are you looking out for me?â
Energy crackled between them. He could feel the pull right in the center of his chest, drawing him to her. âYou in or out?â
âI donât know. Iâd hate to blow it for you guys.â
âI wouldnât have suggested it if I didnât think you could do it.â
âYouâve got a lot of faith in me.â
That spark in her eyes? It lit a fuse in him. Something that hadnât happened in years. âWeâll help you.â
âYouâre going to help me plan a clambake?â
She sounded a little flirty, and he didnât want her getting the wrong impression, so he shifted gears. âBetween me and my mom, yeah. Weâll help you.â
âMy wifeâs probably done fifty of âem.â Terrence joined them. âYou got this.â
Mimi looked at them both but settled her gaze on Calix, as though needing his support.
He gave a firm nod.
âOkay. Letâs do it.â

Careful to keep her fingers away from the flame, Mimi charred the red pepper while watching Calix lean into the refrigerator. The muscles in his biceps
