possibility.”
“You said you dumped Eron…”
“Ethan.”
“After he cheated. You’re not still… you don’t have…”
She wrinkled her nose. “No. I thought I did… but no, big no. He was such a… such an alpha . Always getting angry over nothing. He used to get into arguments with everyone. He once tried to punch the deli guy for cutting a slice of beef too thin. Not to mention what happened when the guy at Burger Queen forgot his extra pickle. He has trouble with his rage and therapy does not help. He was exhausting, but at the time I stupidly thought I could change him. So no, I’m glad he’s gone. Just wish he’d get the message and leave me alone. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” he grunted, trying not to scowl too ferociously.
“You look like someone just kicked you in the family jewels,” she teased.
“Let’s go and get some new locks for your windows and doors.” While he and his bear sulked over the fact that her ex-asshole sounded just like him.

Gunner folded his arms as Rick, the SEA Medical Examiner, looked over the body of the giraffe.
“Cause of death appears to be a broken neck,” said Rick.
“Looks like a robbery, her purse is missing.”
Rick sniffed and pointed to a mark on her chest. “It looks like she was injected, or more likely shot with a tranq gun.”
Gunner’s bear growled. “So her robber tranqed her, robbed her and then snapped her neck?”
Isis canted her head. “That’s odd. Why not just leave her after they robbed her?”
Rick stood up. “I’ll need to test her blood to find out what sedative was used; maybe that will help find out who did this.”
Gunner nodded. “Thanks.” He turned to Isis. “Get Jessie to check out any security footage she can find for the area. We got any idea what she was doing here?”
Isis shook her head. “She lives and works on the other side of town. Maybe she was looking for a little company .” The street was notorious for its prostitutes. “Wayne and Cutter are going to talk to her friends and co-workers – maybe they’ll know if she liked to walk on the wild side. But FYI she was married – they’re leaving the husband for you.”
He grunted. “Crime scene techs find anything?”
“It’s an alley, so yeah, tons. All gross and probably nothing to do with this murder.”
“Okay, keep me posted. I’ll talk to the husband.”
The huge polar bear cracked his neck. He enjoyed his job, but death notifications were awful. Especially when he had to ask questions about what the deceased wife would have been doing hanging around in this area of town. He thought of his pretty pregnant mate waiting for him and his bear rumbled. Just the thought of her was enough to get him through anything.
Chapter Ten
Zane’s bear couldn’t understand the problem. But then the bear never did. The beast didn’t see what was wrong with pulling off someone’s side mirror and trying to beat them with it just because they parked in the spot you wanted. The bear didn’t get that you can’t rear end someone, just because they cut you off. To the bear, those things were perfectly reasonable reactions.
But the problem now was Sky. There was something about her, something that called to him. He was glad she wasn’t hung up on her ex, but the ex – Esther or something - sounded depressingly like Zane.
How many times had he got in arguments over nothing? At the time, the fact that the pizza guy forgot the jalapeño s seemed big, and was well worth the argument, but now… Now throwing the pizza at him seemed kind of childish and possibly an overreaction. His bear still growled in disagreement.
The bear had no restraint. On the other hand, Zane was trying to learn restraint. He was trying to be better. He’d already lost his job over his outbursts; he didn’t want to lose anything else – like his freedom. Maybe he could show
