know her.â
Allie couldnât believe her ears. She didnât want to believe her ears. She realized that what she was feeling was jealousy, which was totally dumb. How could she be jealous over Dub?
She remembered John Walker saying that Dub was jealous. Was it true? And was he trying to get back at Allie and make her feel the same way by hanging around with Pam? It was ridiculous! But maybe . . .
Meanwhile, Dub was going on and on. âNow that sheâs not really friends with Karen, sheâs completely different.â
âYeah, well, wasnât it you who said a leopard doesnât change her spots overnight?â Allie said.
âGeez, how come youâre being so grouchy?â
âIâm
not
being grouchy!â Allie said loudly, hearing as she spoke how grouchy she sounded.
âIf you say so,â said Dub. âHey, how was the library?â
âSomething really, really strange happened.â Allie took a deep breath and told him everything.
âWow,â Dub said when she had finished.
âI know. Pretty amazing how she made the microfilm melt, huh?â
âYou think she did that?â
âWell, I donât think it was a coincidence. It happened just when I was reading that the fire was suspicious and they were questioning Mrs. Hobbs.â
There was silence on the other end of the phone.
âDub?â
âIâm here,â Dub said slowly. âYou know what youâre saying, donât you? That would mean she killed her husband and her own baby.â
âI know,â said Allie. âAnd John Walker, too, donât forget. My ghost.â
âBut why would she go back in the house and nearly kill herself trying to save them if she set the fire in the first place?â Dub asked.
âTo prevent anyone from suspecting her,â Allie answered. To herself she added, Obviously.
âSounds kind of far-fetched to me,â Dub said matter-of-factly.
âWell, what do
you
think happened, then?â asked Allie, suddenly furious.
âI have no idea, Al,â Dub said carefully. âIâm just saying itâs kind of hard to believe that somebody would kill her own kid. Even the Snapping Turtle.â
âThen why did she make the microfilm melt just when I was about to find out more? If sheâs innocent, why not let me read all about it in the paper?â
âI donât know.â Dub was quiet for a minute. âButif she can do stuff like that, maybe you should stay away from her.â
âYeah. But what about John Walker?â
âWhat about him?â
âDub! What if Iâd just ignored Lucy Stiles? Raymond Gagney would have gotten away with murdering her!â
âThis seems different somehow.â
âHow?â Allie demanded.
âI donât know exactly,â Dub said thoughtfully. âThis guy Walker . . . I canât figure him out. If he really was murdered, and he wants you to prove it, heâs not giving you much to go on. You know what I mean?â
Allie couldnât believe Dub. âWhat do you mean,
if
he was murdered?â
âLook, what I mean is, Lucy tried to help you, giving you clues and stuff,â Dub went on. âThis guy kind of shows up and looks sad, and leaves you to fill in the blanks by yourself.â
Allie felt outraged on John Walkerâs behalf. The poor guy was dead, murdered, and all Dub could do was pick on him. âIâm sure heâs trying his best,â she said tightly.
âMaybe,â said Dub. âBut this letter from Hobbsy . . . Itâs creepy. Iâm afraid youâll end up in trouble.â
âLike I didnât end up in trouble last time, when Gag-Me was trying to kill me in the glen!â
âOkay, okay. All Iâm saying is, you might not be so lucky this time, Al.â
âDub, since when are you such a wimp? I was hoping youâd help me figure out a
