you tell a guy noâno to anythingâthe first brilliant theory they come up with is that youâre gay. It never, ever occurs to the guy that maybe heâs just a toad.â
âNot every guy is a toad,â Aisha said. âBut Nina always says no. Has she ever had a relationship that lasted more than one date? Has she ever mentioned being interested in a guy?â
âLook, Ninaâs just Nina, all right?â Zoey said hotly. âShe has the right to be however she wants.â
âSheâs not gay,â Claire said. âSo you two can rest easy. I think there is a guy sheâs interested in.â
Claire was gratified by the way both Zoey and Aisha stared at her, jaws open.
âWho?â Aisha asked.
âShe would have told me,â Zoey said.
Claire smiled. âLook, Iâve told you all I can without indulging in gossip. You wouldnât want me to gossip about my own sister behind her back, would you?â
âWhy doesnât she go out with this guy, then?â Aisha asked.
Claire shrugged. âItâs all one-way. I donât think he even knows sheâs alive.â
âPoor Nina,â Zoey said thoughtfully.
âOh, well,â Claire said lightly. âI guess unrequited love happens to everyone sooner or later.â She turned on the water and began splashing her face. âEven to girls with perfect bodies and that whole air-of-mystery thing.â
âOf course she heard us talking about her; she was toying with us,â Aisha grumbled. âYou think air of mystery is just a phrase that happened to pop into her mind? Now she thinks I think sheâs arrogant.â
âShe thinks I think sheâs very smart and has a perfect body. Sheâll think Iâm jealous of her,â Zoey complained.
They emerged from the gym, and Aisha glanced at herwatch. âWe have time to kill. You want to go downtown?â
âWe could get my folksâ real car and drive out to the mall,â Zoey suggested.
âDo you have the keys?â
âSure. I can take the car anytime, as long as Iâm sure my parents are staying on the island. Iâll give my mom a quick call, then we hit the garage and get in a couple hours of shoppage.â
Fifteen minutes later they were on the road toward the mall. âDo you think Claire was telling the truth about Nina?â Aisha asked. She didnât want to press the issue too much because she knew Zoey was sensitive about it.
âWho knows with Claire?â Zoey said.
âNina would have told you if she was hot for some guy,â Aisha said.
âNina canât keep secrets,â Zoey agreed. âBut by the same token, she could never keep secret about being gay if she were. Personally, I think Ninaâs just . . . original.â
Aisha nodded, unconvinced, as they cruised the mall parking lot.
âIs that a space?â Zoey asked.
âNo, handicapped.â
âHow aboutââ
âMotorcycle.â
âThere,â Zoey said, quickly pulling into an open space.âHey, isnât that Christopher?â
Aisha followed the direction Zoey was pointing. Just visible through several parked cars was Christopher, passing out of sight. Aisha opened the door quickly and stood up, ready to yell to him. But then she stopped herself.
Zoey climbed out, too. âThere he is,â she said, âsee?â
âYes, I see,â Aisha said. She met Zoeyâs puzzled stare. âI also see that girl heâs following.â She had a blond ponytail that fell straight down her back to the middle of a behind that hung half out of a pair of Daisy Dukes.
âTheyâre just walking in the same direction,â Zoey said.
âAnd now?â Christopher had drawn even with the girl and was smiling. The girl smiled back and said something that made Christopher laugh.
âNow heâs just saying hi,â Zoey said.
âUh-huh. Come
