unidentified being living
in our house with us!  At least if she were Vampire, I would halfway know what
to expect, but this thing …  How could I know anything about her, what
she was capable of?  Alas, I did not have authority over such decisions.
“I see… how lovely,” I stammered, wishing it would go away.
“And how is it you two are acquainted?”
Naturally, Niccolò was more than happy to offer the
details.  “I befriended Aislinn decades ago after meeting upon the streets here
in Florence.  On several occasions, we had some very lovely chats.  At the time
she was residing at the home of a pair of Succubi and I actually extended my
offer to her then.  However, extenuating circumstances rendered her unable to
accept at the time.  Then some years later, we ran into one another again at a
Vampire Ball at the Villa of her then Mistress in San Gimignano.  I reminded
her that my offer still stood then and now here she is!”
I was exceedingly disappointed, for I liked things the way they
were with just he and I— besides the fact that I did not want another female
around me trying to seduce me.  After loving and leaving Giuliana, I wanted
nothing to do with other women— and certainly not one like she, whatever that
may be— which is why the established arrangement I had with Niccolò worked so
well.
Aislinn was what most men would consider to be beautiful, I
suppose, but in some way I could not quite figure out, she just made me feel
uneasy.
Having been all too familiar with other Succubi from my
years at Sanguelascivia , I kept myself guarded from her.  For one, whether
she truly was one or not, having been reared by those Succubi, she had never
been properly introduced to the more civilized manner of Vampire existence.
Not all Vampires must kill in order to survive.  Rather, the highly
refined ones, like Niccolò, cordially maintained blood servants to humanely provide
for their needs.
Yet, gratefully, never did Aislinn attempt to make a move on
me.  As a matter of fact, I was beginning to believe that she had some kind of neurosis
about men, for when Niccolò brought home a perfectly fine specimen of a young
man to serve as a blood servant for her, she acted quite bizarrely, indeed.
And then, quite strangely, soon thereafter she sent Alonzo away.
I was actually fond of him and thought it would have been nice to have another human guy around here with whom to become friends.  I found it quite odd that she
sent him away.  I had been under the impression that she had liked him plenty
well.  But then she was the type who seemed perfectly contented to revel in her
own self-inflicted torture.  Perhaps he threatened to upset that fucked up
equilibrium she had established.  Or perhaps he just did not please her
sufficiently.  And then, perhaps she simply did not like the way he tasted.
And then not a month later, I overheard my Master and
Aislinn discussing how they would soon travel to Venice to procure a blood
servant for her.  I had also managed to overhear that Aislinn preferred a
female.  My heart leapt.  How badly I wanted to ask if they would indeed be
going to Sanguelascivia , and if so, would they look for my Giuliana, if
naught else, then just to report back that she is alright.
But, alas, I did not, as it was not my place to pry in my Master’s
affairs.  That would have been disrespectful, and Niccolò had been nothing but
kind and decent to me, more so than I ever imagined any Vampire could possibly
be.  Therefore, I dared not ask.  However, everyday that they were away, I prayed
that fate would intervene to reunite us.

Chapter Nine

T hey remained away for only a few days, and yet it
felt as an eternity, waiting to see if my prayers would deliver to me that
which I yearned.
I was growing disheartened when a fourth night had passed
without their return.  At nearly dawn, I had decided to retire to bed to
slumber as much of the day away as
