Bilson closed her eyes and rubbed her temples with two fingers as she reclined in her office chair. She had been getting headaches every day for a week now, and they seemed to be getting worse each time they started. Her co-worker Ali had suggested that she take some time off to go to a doctor, but she just hadn’t been able to make time.

There were at least fifteen separate reports that needed to be analyzed and edited, and at eighty pages each, they would never be done in time if she left the office for even half an hour while she was at work. Her boss frowned upon his employees taking work home with them, so it seemed that her only real option was to ignore the headaches and hope they went away. Alternatively, she could hope for a Saturday appointment opening at her GP’s office, but that was unlikely to happen.

Right now, her brain felt as if it was being split in two by an ax, and as she sighed and massaged her head, she opened her eyes to see Ali standing by her cubicle.

“Are you still getting those headaches? Really, Sarah, you need to get it checked out. My Mom knew someone who had a really bad headache one day, and the next day they died of a brain aneurysm,” she said, her eyebrows knitted together.

“Wow, way to make me feel better, Ali!” Sarah replied. “I would go to a doctor, but I just don’t have time at the moment, with these reports coming in from Wentworth, along with the merger and all.”

“Your health is more important than work. Why don’t you go to an after-hours medical clinic? There’s one near my house, right next to Wilson Park up on Nicholson Road. That’s probably the closest one.”

“Oh… I didn’t even think of that. Thanks, Ali.”

After Ali had left, Sarah looked up the after-hours clinic online to see exactly where they were. Their website said they were open until ten o’clock at night, and that appointments weren’t necessary. All a person had to do was walk in, take a number from the receptionist and wait for a doctor to see them. Well, that’s convenient, she thought. If she left the office at six-thirty and then had a quick dinner at home, she should be able to make it to the clinic by around seven-thirty or eight at the latest.

A few hours later, it was finally time to finish work, and Sarah shut down her computer, grabbed her bag and then left. It was difficult to drive with such a bad headache. Every few minutes she just wanted to close her eyes and curl up into a ball. When she arrived home, she took a couple of Advil and ate some dinner leftovers from the night before, and then grabbed her bag and looked at the clock. It was only just after seven. Plenty of time to get there and get an appointment.

As she checked the time, her eyes fell on the calendar that hung next to the clock. 17 th … 18 th …19 th ... wait, how did I not notice this? she wondered, realizing that her period was late. For a fleeting moment she panicked and thought she was pregnant before remembering that she hadn’t had sex in over six months. Her last relationship had ended abruptly when her ex had decided he preferred the skinny blonde receptionist at his office and then cruelly dumped Sarah via text message. So why is my period late? It’s always been regular. Maybe I’ve just gained so much weight that my body is shutting everything down, she thought, pinching her upper arms as she looked down at herself.

No one except her ex had ever said anything insulting about her weight, but she knew that she wasn’t the skinniest person alive, especially after the breakup. Since that had happened, she had taken to eating a box of chocolates and a tub of ice-cream every weekend to cheer herself up and distract her from the loneliness, and that had caused her to gain another ten pounds of padding around her hips and thighs. Another ten pounds I didn’t need, she thought bitterly.

Every time she got on the scales, she promised herself that
