hadn’t spoken to him in days, ever since he had asked me to move out, telling me that the church disapproved of us living together.
The phone began to ring, each one sending another burst of adrenaline through my body. Finally, on the third ring, Justin picked up.
“Oh, my God, Chelsea...” he said, in a panic. “Where in the hell have you been? I’ve been worried sick about you. I’ve been calling everybody I know, including the police. They’re looking everywhere for you.”
The fucking police? Typical Justin...
“Justin, I’m fine,” I said, already losing my patience with him. “Why in the fuck did you call the police? I just went for a road trip to see my sister. Relax.”
Justin was silent for a moment, but I could still hear him breathing on the other end of the line. Finally, he spoke again.
“Well, I’m glad to hear that you’re okay,” he said. “It’s good to hear your voice. So, what are you doing? Where are you? Your Mom wouldn’t tell me anything, but I had this feeling that she knew. You guys and your secrets.”
Ah, that’s why I love you, Mom. I knew you’d cover for me.
“Listen, Justin,” I said. “I didn’t call to chit chat or to catch up. I called to tell you that we’re done. The relationship, if you want to call it that, is over. There’s really nothing else that needs to be said.”
I expected Justin to start crying, so I was shocked when he let out a soft chuckle underneath his breath.
“You say that like I’m supposed to be surprised by it,” he commented. “I knew the minute that you moved out that you would just disappear like a selfish little bitch.”
My jaw dropped. I had never heard Justin curse before, let alone call me a bitch. I was silent as he continued.
“It was always about you, wasn’t it, Chelsea?” he said, his voice getting louder. “Well, I’m glad you called, because I have news for you. I met someone two days after you left. Her name is Rachel and she goes to my church. You do you remember the church we used to go to, right? Well, I asked her to marry me, and she said yes. She’ll be moving in right after we’re married.”
Wait, what?
I couldn’t tell if he was lying. His story was hard to believe, but I also wouldn’t put it past him to do something ridiculous like that. I couldn’t think of much to say, so I kept it simple.
“Um...that’s good, Justin,” I said. “Hopefully you’ll turn her into a very boring person, who hates every aspect of her life with you, just like you did to me.”
Right then, Tommy walked into the room.
“Babe, you ready?” he asked. “The motorcycle’s running.”
I turned to look and then a smile crossed my face.
“Who in the fuck is that?” Justin shouted, from the other end of the line. “You little fucking whore. Who is that guy that was just talking?”
Tommy smiled as I held up the phone and we both listened to Justin making an ass out of himself.
After a few seconds, Justin was quiet. It gave me just enough time to whisper, “Go fuck yourself, Justin,” into the receiver. Then I hung up the phone, tossing it back into my purse.
Chapter 14
––––––––
T ommy took a stepped close to me and placed his hands on my hips.
“Everything okay?” he asked.
I nodded as a genuine smile crossed my face.
“Things have honestly never been better,” I said.
I put my hands on Tommy’s chest. He had changed into a blue flannel shirt, leaving the top few buttons open. His muscular pecks were exposed and I brought my hands to them, feeling the heat as it poured off of his skin.
It was finally over. My old life was gone, nothing more than a memory. And as I stood in front of Tommy, running my fingers over his chest, I began to feel more relieved than I had in my entire life. It was like my whole life up to that point had been wrong and I had finally found what I was looking for. And that alone, turned me on so much that couldn’t even contain myself.
“Turn off
