thereâs almost nothing about Vaerelya, except that she had âsome imaging talent,â according to Gauswn. Chaerilla was powerful enough to be senior imager for three maitres. They didnât rank imagers by ability the way we do now, but with what she did, she had to be the equivalent of a Maitre DâEsprit or even a Maitre DâImage. There might have been more about her, butâ¦â
âAnything more would have been in the records that burned when Desyrkâs cannon put the old administration building to flames,â Alyna said. âSince our daughter canât be the imager whoâs prowling around under a concealment, who else do you think it might be?â
âIn theory, any senior maitre and most of the junior ones. We can leave out Llendyr and Petros. Petros canât, and Llendyr canât hold anything but a blurring concealment for any length of time. Narryn isnât much better. As our daughter has shown, we also canât limit the possibilities to maitres. There are likely some thirds who might have figured it out on their own. Theyâd have to be strong or with good technique.â Alastar frowned. âI can think of a number with the strength, but Linzya and Charlina, possibly Kaylet, are the only thirds with that kind of finesse.â
âKayletâs the main assistant to Petros, and the stableâs close to the factorage.â
âThatâs possible, but he doesnât seem the type.â
âIâd agree, but ⦠we just might be looking for someone who doesnât seem the type. The type who would seem the most obvious isââ
âBettaur. But he knows weâd immediately think of him if he did something like that.â
âI agree on that as well.â
Alastar chuckled. âFor now, weâll have to leave it at that. What are your thoughts on the succession at Westisle?â
âYou know much more about that than I ever could. What do you think?â
âIâm afraid that either Voltyrn or Choran will continue Zhelanâs practice of not challenging the younger imagers, and Westisle will end up the way Imagisle was beforeâ¦â Alastar really didnât want to finish the sentence.
âBefore you arrived and proceeded to upend everything for the better?â
âThatâs what I worry about.â
âWhat about asking Smarthyl?â
Alastar shook his head. âHeâs got to be close to eighty. Even if he would take it, he likely wouldnât live long enough before Iâd have to find a successor for him.â
âCyran wonât do. Heâs a dear man and a good senior imager for you, and Meiryl has done so much so quietly, butâ¦â
âHe likes to be liked too much. He knows it, too. Heâd do it if I asked, but heâd ask if it was a good idea.â
âWhat about Taryn? Heâs solid and doesnât have that many ties here.â
âHeâs a possibility. I worry that heâs a bit like Cyran.â
âI can see that, although heâd be better than Cyran. Who else is there? Anyone else with the ability to possibly become a Maitre DâEsprit is awfully young.â
âYou mean Arion or Shaelyt?â
âArion would be a good choice. Iâm not sure Iâd want to lose Tiranya and Shaelyt.â
âThen thereâs the problem of Bettaur,â Alyna said blandly.
âHe works hard, but only hard enough to get the job done.â Alastar didnât have to mention that always pressing, if carefully, the limits of imaging ability was the only way for imagers to improve and strengthen their abilities. âTaurekâs more likely to become a Maitre DâEsprit than Bettaur. If he were ten years older, Iâd consider him. Heâs stubborn enough not to be worn down by imagers like Voltyrn and Choran.â
âOh ⦠I forgot to tell you. Tiranya thinks that Linzya should be
