have told us about the map,â she said. Then she followed the others off the hill.
I shrugged.
âYouâre better off without those bozos,â said Fred. âNow give me the map. I havenât got all day, you know.â
âI donât have it here,â I told him. âItâs at home. Iâll bring it tomorrow.â
âMake sure you do, McThrottle,â Fred warned. âFirst thing. Before school.â
âYeah,â said Clive. âMake sure . . . or else.â
Fred and Clive laughed and headed off towards the canteen.
I waited until they were out of sight and then went after the others.
I had some explaining to do.

Dirty double-double crosser
I found Gretel, Jack, Newton and Jenny in our favourite spot at the side of the basketball court.
âWhy are you here?â said Jack. âDonât your new friends want to play with you anymore?â
âTheyâre not my friends,â I said. âYou are!â
âWell you sure donât act like it,â said Gretel. âReal friends trust each other.â
âI
do
trust you,â I said.
âWhy didnât you tell us about the map, then?â asked Jenny.
âBecause there is no map,â I said.
âWhat do you mean?â Newton was perplexed. âYou just told Fred that you had one. If you donât give him a map, heâs going to squeeze your neck so hard that your head will pop like a pimple.â
âIâll give him a map, all right,â I said. âA
fake
map with the treasure marked as far away from Skull Island as possible. It will get Fred and Clive off ourbacks, and weâll let everybody else know about it as well. Skull Island will be all ours again.â
âGreat idea, Henry!â said Jenny. âI knew you werenât really a dirty double-crosser.â
âWell, actually I am,â I said. âIâm going to double-cross Fred with the fake map.â
âOh, yeah,â said Jenny, frowning.
âAnd then, to make it even more complicated, Iâm going to double-double-cross Fred by telling him that I told you all that itâs a fake map. Then weâll be able to continue digging on Skull Island where we know the treasure
really
is.â
âWow,â said Jenny. âYouâre a dirty double-
double
-crosser!â
âVery clever, Henry,â said Jack. âBut where are we going to get a fake treasure map?â
âWeâre going to make one, of course,â I said.
âAnd just how do we do that?â said Jack.
âEasy!â I said.
