hour in.â
âRight. Well. Yeah, okay. Letâs just say that I discovered what Iâll refer to as the Drooling Horndog Theory.â
âDrooling horndogs?â Diane hooted with laughter. âIâm definitely glad I wasnât there. Whatâs the gist?â
âThe bottom line of this theory is that men donât have to call as many shots as we seem to think theyâre entitled to. I think itâs a fear thing.â
âThatâs an interesting observation,â Diane said. âAs they say, âMan has the advantage of choice, woman only the power of refusalâ?â
âExactly! Men just arenât as scary as we seem to think they are. We let them have this power over us and we shouldnât. Theyâre all pretty much the same, with the same instincts and the same reflexes and the same tendencies. Even the good-looking ones.â
Everyone digested that bit of news, Suz nodding in wizened agreement.
Finally, Audra begrudgingly said, âWell, thatâs more reasonablethan I expected.â But then she coughed, blew her nose, and scratched her neck vigorously.
âJesus, Audra, are those turning into hives now? Youâre not getting hives just because of me, are you?â
Audraâs eyes widened and she pulled a gold compact with a larger mirror out of her purse and moved it around. âOh, God, youâre right. The blotches are becoming hives. This is too much.â She chewed on her lower lip and added, âI want you to see Bruno. Please, Hay. I really want to contribute.â
âWhoâs Bruno again?â Hayley asked.
âBruno Maffri. Heâs Audraâs personal coach,â Diane explained. âA specialist in success-visualization technique. Heâs quite good. Helped me pass the GMAT. It was actually much cheaper than taking a monthâs worth of study prep courses.â
Suz rested her chin on her palm and watched Audra fuss with the hives. âYou just canât stand it that I might have more to offer than you.â
Audra glanced up at Suz, gave an exasperated squeak, and tossed the compact back into her purse in a gesture of surrender. She spread a napkin on the tabletop, then laid her head on top of her crossed arms. In a muffled voice she said, âIâm sorry, Suzy. Iâm just jealous. You know I hate to lose.â
âThis isnât a competition, people.â Hayley looked from one girl to the other. âThis is my life. Look, Aud, you know I appreciate that you want to help me, but it looks like Iâm getting things under control.â
Audra blew her nose loudly in response.
Hayley cringed at the sound and said, âMaybe you should keep that appointment for yourself.â
âI donât think Brunoâs equipped to handle this. I need to see somebody else. Somebody who specializes in nervous tension. Please take the appointment.â
But Hayley was feeling cocky this morning. Sheâd had a day to recover from her hangover and now she was fully able to appreciate Friday nightâs success. âThanks, but I think Iâll pass.â
This triggered a rather alarming coughing fit. âPlease take it, Hay. Consider it reinforcement. And even if youâve got the personal part under control, youâre going to need a new job.â
Hayley shook her head and tossed her crumpled napkin on the table. âThanks, but Iâm going down to the Tech Job Fair at the Exploratorium. Iâm sure Iâll find something. Besides, to be totally honest, psychology mumbo jumbo really isnât my thing.â
âNo, but this is different. Heâs not a licensed psychologist,â Diane explained.
âOh, well, that makes me feel so much better.â Hayley pushed her empty latte mug away. âThanksâreally, thanksâbut no, thanks.â
Suz slapped the table gleefully. âSorry, Audra, but that settles it. Hayleyâs doing fine
