CUT TO:
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE SALLYâS APARTMENTâNIGHT
Sally opens the door. She wears a bathrobe. She is crying and looks terrible
.
SALLY Â Â Â Â Hi.
HARRY Â Â Â Â Are you all right?
SALLY Â Â Â Â Come on in.
Harry follows her inside and closes the door
.
INT. SALLYâS APARTMENTâNIGHT
SALLY Â Â Â Â
(through tears)
Iâm sorry to call you so late.
HARRY Â Â Â Â Itâs all right.
She goes on sobbing, then pulls back and gives a huge wheeze
.
SALLY Â Â Â Â I need a Kleenex.
HARRY Â Â Â Â Okay.
SALLY Â Â Â Â Okay.
Sally starts into the bedroom
.
INT. SALLYâS BEDROOMâNIGHT
Sally enters the room, looks for the Kleenex. Harry sits on the bed
.
SALLY     He just called me up. Just wanted to see how you were. Fine, how are you? Fineâ¦. His secretaryâs on vacation, everythingâs all backed up, heâs got a big case in Newark, blah blah blah, and Iâm thinking, Iâm over him, I really am over him, I canât believe I was ever remotely interested in any of this, and then he said, âI have some news.â
Sally starts to cry again
.
SALLY Â Â Â Â ( CONTâD )Â Â Â Â She works in his office. Sheâs a paralegal. Her name is Kimberly.
He just met her
. Sheâs supposed to be his transitional person, sheâs not supposed to be the one.
(beat)
All this time Iâve been saying he didnât want to get married.
(beat)
But the truth is he didnât want to marry
me
. He didnât love
me
.
HARRY Â Â Â Â If you could take him back right now, would you?
SALLY Â Â Â Â No. But why didnât he want to marry me? Whatâs the matter with me?
HARRY Â Â Â Â Nothing.
SALLY Â Â Â Â Iâm difficult.
HARRY Â Â Â Â Youâre challenging.
SALLY Â Â Â Â Iâm too structured. Iâm completely closed off.
HARRY Â Â Â Â But in a good way.
SALLY Â Â Â Â No, no, no. I drove him away.
Crying even harder now
.
SALLY Â Â Â Â ( CONTâD )Â Â Â Â And Iâm going to be forty.
HARRY Â Â Â Â When?
SALLY Â Â Â Â Someday.
HARRY Â Â Â Â In eight years.
SALLY Â Â Â Â But itâs there, itâs just sitting there like this big dead end. Itâs not the same for men. Charlie Chaplin had babies when he was seventy-three.
HARRY Â Â Â Â Yeah, but he was too old to pick them up.
She smiles a little, then starts crying again
.
HARRY Â Â Â Â ( CONTâD )Â Â Â Â Oh, câmere, câmere.
(he gives her a
hug)
Itâs going to be okay. Youâre gonna be fine, youâll see.
Sally sniffles into Harryâs shirt
.
HARRY Â Â Â Â ( CONTâD )Â Â Â Â Go ahead, itâs not one of my favorites anyway. Itâs gonna be okay.
Harry holds her. He gives her a kiss, starts to break the hug
.
HARRY Â Â Â Â ( CONTâD )Â Â Â Â Iâll make you some tea.
SALLY Â Â Â Â Harry, could
