just in case you said ...â His voice trailed off.
Janet felt so sorry for him. He look humiliated, but, trapped in the garden with the Slaters, heâd have to see it through to the end. What if her father refused? Her hope of getting away could be dashed and she would have to wait till she was twenty-one. Three more years.
âSo, if I do give my consent, where are you thinking of living?â
âAt the moment I share a flat with my boss, Danny, but heâs moving and Iâm taking over the tenancy.â
âI see,â repeated the Reverend. âAnd where is this flat?â
âLondon, sir.â
Janet smiled at Mark.
âAnd when were you thinking of getting married? Providing, of course, I give my permission.â
âNext year. When Danny moves out Iâll have to get the flat decorated and furnished.â He looked at Janet and grinned.
âNext year. Well, at least you sound as if youâll be taking your responsibilities seriously. I will have to give this some serious thought. A lot can happen in a year. And as your mother said, you, Janet, are very young.â
Janet felt deflated. Was he doing this deliberately? âIâll be nineteen next year.â
âI still think itâs very young to take on such responsibilities.â
âIâm sure Mark is very level-headed,â said Mrs Slater hurriedly.
âWe shall see.â Her husband moved away.
âTea, Mark?â asked Mrs Slater.
âNo, thank you. Janet, can we go for a walk?â
âIâll get my bag.â Janet was pleased to get away from any more questions.
When they shut the gate Mark let out a loud sigh. âDâyou know, I think that was the longest half-hour of my life?â
Janet held on to his arm and laughed. âYou should have seen your face.â
âWhy? What was wrong with it?â
âNothing, but you looked ever so worried.â
âI was, and we didnât get an answer, did we?â
âNo, I dare say Iâll get a grilling when I get back.â
âWhat dâyou think our chances are?â
âI donât know.â Janet was worried in case her father brought up the past. Would he?
âWhat if he says no?â
âI donât think he will. Heâs just making sure you squirm a bit.â
âI certainly did that. If he says yes perhaps we could get you a ring next Saturday.â
âIâd like that.â
âWill I have to wait till weâre married for ... you know?â
âMost definitely yes.â
âThought you might say that.â
âDo you mind?â
âNo, not really. Itâs nice to think that Iâll be the first.â
Janet couldnât meet his eyes as she didnât have an answer to that. But she knew she had to tell him about Paula soon.
Chapter 8
Mark kissed Janet gently. âIâll see you later.â
She watched him drive away then slowly made her way back into the house.
âJanet? In here.â Her father was calling from his study. âSit down.â
She did as she was told.
âThis business with Mark Scott has come as rather a shock to both your mother and myself.â He looked at her quizzically. âYouâre not in any kind of trouble again, are you?â
Janet felt her face flush with anger as well as embarrassment. âNo, Father. I made one mistake and I wonât be repeating it.â
âVery good. Heâs a nice lad and comes from a well-respected family.â He gave her a rare smile. âI think we can say you have my permission.â
âThank you.â She left the room. It was so formal.
Her mother was waiting outside. âJanet, come with me.â
She followed her mother into the drawing room and sat in an armchair opposite her.
âWe have to have a little talk.â
Janet wanted to laugh. Surely she wasnât going to tell her about the birds and bees?
âAre you
