Chapter 3
Bones
They went in the village inn. Mr Blood and the Sheriff sat at a table and made plans.
Edgar and Mary looked around. Hanging on the walls were lots of bones. There were dog skulls and deer horns, and shark jaw bones with razor-sharp teeth.
A serving maid called Anne came to talk to the Sheriff. She spoke quietly but Edgar and Mary could just hear what she was saying.
âThey shouldnât be here,â Anne said, pointing at Edgar and Mary.
âSssh,â said the Sheriff with a thin smile.
âThis is no place for children,â said Anne. âItâs one thing to bring Mr Blood here. He is a werewolf hunter. Itâs his job to go into danger. But we all know what werewolves do to children.â
The Sheriffâs smile faded. He looked angry now.
Anne went on. âItâs not right to put these children in danger.
They
arenât werewolf hunters. This is wrong.â
âThese people are our guests. Donât be rude,â said the Sheriff crossly.
Anne stamped off and began mopping the floor.
âI donât like this,â she said to herself.
âIâm going to talk to Anne,â Mary told Edgar.
âExcuse me,â she said to Anne.
âYes, dear?â Anne looked up. She had a kind face.
âYou donât need to worry about us, you know,â said Mary. âMr Blood looks after us.â
Edgar laughed. He didnât think Mr Blood looked after them very well.
âIâm sure he takes good care of you, dear,â said Anne. âItâs a long time since Iâve seen someone your age, thatâs all.â
âThere must be some children on the island,â said Mary.
Anneâs eyes filled with tears and she looked away. âThere are no children. Not any more,â she said. âAnd you should not be here now. Itâs not right.â
Anne looked sad and angry. âGo and sit with Mr Blood,â she said. âStay close to him.â
Mary and Edgar walked back to the table and sat down.
âSo, this is the plan,â the Sheriff was saying. âI tell everyone to come to the barn before nightfall. We count heads every hour, to make sure nobody leaves.â
âThatâs right,â said Mr Blood.
âAnd we wait for the werewolf to change from human to wolf,â said the Sheriff.
âYes,â said Mr Blood. âWerewolves have to turn into wolves on the night of the full moon. If you have a werewolf on the island, it will change shape tonight. And if everyone is in the barn, we will see it happen.â
âAnd what will you do?â asked the Sheriff.
âI will kill it,â replied Mr Blood.
Chapter 4
The Barn
About forty men and women came to the barn that evening.
Mary and Edgar stood at the back of the barn. The men and women kept turning to stare at them.
âI donât like this,â Mary whispered to Edgar. âWhy are there are no children here?â
âI know,â said Edgar. âSomething is wrong with this island.â
The Sheriff called for everyone to listen.
âFriends! It is a full moon tonight.â The Sheriff pointed at Mr Blood. âAnd we all know why this man is here.â
âHe kills werewolves,â said a woman.
âHe wants to kill one of us,â growled one of the men.
Other men agreed with him. They didnât seem happy to see the Dark Hunter.
Mr Blood spoke up.
âYou have nothing to fear from me unless you are hiding a very dark secret. Maybe there is a werewolf on the island. Maybe not.â
A few people laughed.
âTonight we will find out,â said Mr Blood. âIs everyone on the island here?â
âWe are all in this barn,â replied the Sheriff.
âGood. Then lock the door, please, and hand me the key,â said Mr Blood.
âOf course,â said the Sheriff. His face twisted in a strange smile.
Edgar and Mary pushed through the crowd. They wanted to
