man could handle her sweet sweet meat.â â
Roscoe and Regina hadnât spied Betsey and the girls peering through the bushes.
âAre you gonna kiss her now, Roscoe?â Betsey pleaded.
âBetsey, this aint none of your business!â
Regina tried to get herself back in some order, but it was no use. Theyâd seen too much already.
âI could kiss her now. Couldnât I, Regina?â
Roscoe lifted Regina off the grass and into the air, sliding her down his body like a man who didnât give a damn what the world thought.
âBetsey, you know your mama wonât approve.â
âPlease, Gina, a real kiss. I just love kisses.â
Charlie shouted from the back porch, âHe donât have no business round here. Regina donât need to be kissing nobody.â
Regina turned round, waved Charlie off her mind. âCharlie, you mind your business and Iâll tend to mine.â
The girls egged Regina and Roscoe on, as they came up onto the porch.
âPlease, a kiss. A real kiss.â
âIâll give you a kiss, Betsey,â Charlie offered sarcastically.
âCharlie, go on away, will you? Donât nobody want no kisses from you.â
That was exactly what Charlie was thinking. It made him mad. Heâd fix em. Heâd fix all of em.
Margot and Sharon took up for Betsey, who was thinking on Eugene, of course.
âYou her cousin, simple.â
âShe wouldnât want no kiss from you.â
Betsey tried to explain it wasnât that she wanted a kiss. She did want a kiss, but not that kind of kiss. Roscoe and Regina had graduated kissing to an art. Betsey knew beginning kisses, but she wanted big ones, like when you fall in love. Roscoe and Regina were in love. Love kisses were the best kind. There was no denying that a kiss from someone you loved was different from any other kind of kiss and should be studied up on and looked at carefully, so you could recognize it when love came down on you. Thatâs what love did. It came down on you like rain or sunshine. All of a sudden thereâd be this sensation in all the muscles and a dizziness in your head and a reaching out for someone and loveâd be all on you. Thatâs the kind of kiss Betsey wanted to see. True romance.
âI wanna see a kiss like when you fall in love.â
âYou aint never been in love,â Charlie retorted.
âOf course not, Iâm getting ready though,â Betsey flew right back at him. She was determined now to get this kissing lesson.
âMama and Daddy donât do that.â Allard scrunched up his face.
âWhere you think they got you at,â Sharon replied.
âWe donât come from no tongue kissing,â Allard insisted.
âYâall donât understand what you been missing,â Betsey exclaimed. âLook at that. How can they breathe? How can they? Oh, when will I fall in love?â
âI wanna be carried off my feet.â Margot pranced.
âI wanta be fainting in the street.â Sharon lay on her side looking at the sky.
âI want him chasing me every heartbeat.â Margot couldnât stop leaping in the air.
âI bet they get germs,â Allard added.
âNo, Allard, people in love donât get germs,â Betsey assured him.
âNo. One of these days some boy from somewhere . . .â
âHey, how bout right over here.â Eugene walked up to the porch, his eyes seeing no one but Betsey.
âWell, maybe someday some boy from somewhereâll come over to share all my grown-up ways, cause Iâma be a woman someday.â
Just as Eugene was about to let Betsey have her wish, Charlie came out from the kitchen with Vida by his side. Regina didnât have a minute to let go of Roscoe before Vida began her harangue.
âYou know, I canât seem to find my fan. Itâs so hot around here these days, itâs a wonder a body could stand to wear
