was frail; the drug usage had worn her body.
Tammy looked at Lena. âHi, Iâm Tammy, Deniseâs mom.â
âOh, I am Lena. Iâm her roommate.â Tammyâs eyes widened.
âSo you the roommate. You wanna get some coffee with me?â
They headed down to the cafeteria. Lena didnât know what to think of Tammy.
âYou know, me and Denise ainât close. I hate it, but itâs true. I been messed up awhile with thangs, but Iâm getting my life together now.â
âI understand.â Lena just agreed, she really didnât understand. She came from a very wealthy family; her mother and father were still together and very happy. Denise was the first less fortunate person sheâd been close to.
âI hate that my baby been through so much âcause of me. The rest of the family, they fucking assholes, treat her like shit âcause she special. You know she is the first in our family to go to college?â
Tammy added sugar to her coffee.
âUm, yeah, she told me. Denise is very special.â Lena headed to the vending machine.
âYes, she is. Damn shame what that girl did to her. Made her so hard now.â
Lena knew something had happened in Deniseâs past. She always wondered why she never dated anyone.
âOh, I didnât know about any girlââ
âYeah, some girl she fell in love with. She did my baby wrong because she didnât know what she wanted. Denise has never given another girl the time of day, well, until you.â
Lena stopped in her tracks. Did she hear Tammy right?
âIâm sorry. What do you mean, until me. Um, do you think me and Denise are dating?â
âNo. I know youâre not. You got a boyfriend, right, football player.â
âBasketball.â
âYeah, see, thatâs what concerns me. Denise finally likes someone, and itâs a girl that she will never have.â
Lena started to feel funny. Could Tammy be telling the truth? Did Denise have a crush on her?
âUm, maâam, I assure you, I donât think youâre right about this. Denise has never expressed anything to me, and we are just friends.â
âIf thatâs what you think. Just as long as you make sure to keep that clear, maybe she wonât fall anymore for you.â
âI really donât think itâs anything like that. Has Denise said this to you?â Lena had to know if there was any truth to what was being said.
âNo, she hasnât, but when your name is brought up, I see the way she looks. I know she likes you, much more than she will ever say.â Tammy grabbed another cup. âLet me get my baby some coffee.â
âOh no. Denise doesnât drink coffee; I got her an apple juice.â
That statement made Tammy look up. âWell, you sure do know her very well, I see.â
âWell, we are roommates.â
âI guess so.â
They headed back to the elevator.
âSo, are you sure that you are completely all about your boyfriend?â
Lena really didnât want to answer the question; the whole conversation was making her very uneasy.
âYes, maâam. Iâm more than sure that we are getting married.â
âGood. Well, please remember that, because I donât want my baby getting hurt. I think she has been through enough without adding the drama of a curious girl trying to make her into her own little experiment.â
Lena didnât respond, she just looked at Tammy.
They made it down the hall just in time to see the nurses bringing the machines out of Memaâs room.
Denise walked out of the room. She looked drained. She laid her head against the wall.
Lenaâs heart was breaking looking at her roommate in so much pain.
âDenise.â Lena put her hand on Deniseâs shoulder.
Denise turned around and looked at her.
âI am sorry for keeping you out so early in the morning, but if itâs possible,
