Carrie said with a grin and remained lying where she was.

“Don’t you need to go home or get to college or… do something else?” he jokingly said when he got to his feet and looked down at her.

“Nope,” she replied. “You’re stuck with me, so just get used to it.”

“I’m so lucky,” he went on in a droll tone.

“Yes, you are,” she said. “And if you make me something nice to eat, you might get very, very lucky. I can be a very bad little girl.”

He shook his head and laughed as he walked away. The rest of the day was spent in bed together and the lovemaking continued as the darkness of evening descended to surround them. They eventually lay on the bed as the tiredness of the day washed over them and it was the happiest Carrie could ever remember being.

“We should always be together,” she said.

“Don’t push your luck,” Crash replied.

“I mean it,” Carrie went on in a quiet voice as she cuddled close to him. “You know I’ll give you whatever you want. Don’t you ever think it would be nice to settle down with someone that loves you and have a happy family life?”

“Sometimes,” Crash said. “It was part of the reason why I got married.”

“Sally wasn’t right for you,” Carrie told him. “It’s me that you need and you can have the happy life you want with me.”

“Shh…” he said and stroked her hair. “Don’t get ahead of yourself. Let’s just enjoy what we have right at this moment. We can worry about the future when it rolls around.”

A smile spread across her face as she kept quiet and nuzzled her head on his chest to listen to his easy breathing. Nothing could spoil what they were sharing now they were finally together as a couple.

    She was sure of it.

Chapter 7

“I’m going to bloody hammer that girl when I get my hands on her,” Samuel let out under his breath.

His day wasn’t going as planned and after so many hours of making calls and putting out the word, he was still waiting for the information he wanted. He’d run out of people to contact, but couldn’t stand being inactive in the house any longer, and the quiet threat to his runaway daughter was made as he opened the door of his car to get in. He slapped his hands on the steering wheel as the annoyance he was experiencing threatened to really come out, but he sucked in a few deep breaths to calm himself down then got the engine running.

The drive to the army base was something he usually enjoyed, but for once the journey just passed him by as his mind focused on more important matters. He didn’t want to believe Carrie would be so foolish and just to give up college on a whim, but couldn’t confess to being totally surprised by her actions. She tended to be ruled more by her heart than her head and was prone to letting her emotions get the better of her.

When he arrived at the base entrance, the guard stepped out of the small gatehouse at the side of the barrier as he approached it and he slowed his car to a stop. He then rolled down the window to show his face.

“Evening, Staff Sergeant Nelson,” the young soldier said in a clipped tone.

Samuel acknowledged the greeting and got his security card from his pocket. It got him access to the base and he waited for the barrier to be raised then put his car in gear to get moving again. He drove to the parking lot and the late hour of the day meant there were plenty of spaces to choose from. Silence surrounded him when he cut the engine and he sat for a few seconds to gather his thoughts.

“Bloody children,” he cursed before making a move to open the door and get out.

The hallways of the main building were largely empty of activity and he only saw a couple of men as he walked in the direction of Major Anderson’s office. He suspected the base commanding officer was his best chance of finding the information he wanted, which was why he made the
