opportunity comes up again.â
âDidnât you get enough at the station house today?â
âApparently not.â
âYou totally humiliated me.â
He blew a burst of air from his cheeks. Brushed his curls with his hand. âI know. I came to say Iâm sorry.â
âWhatever! Just leave me alone.â
He sighed. Looked away and back at me again. Then mischief appeared in those delicious brown eyes.
âOr maybe I did touch you.â
I let out an exaggerated sigh. âDid you touch me or not?â
âDid your boy Rocky do that when he kissed you?â
âAbsolutely not!â
âMaybe Iâm not the gentleman he is. Or is kissing another manâs wife gentlemanly? You tell me , baby.â
I had no energy for Jazzâs Rocky barbs. âIf you want to have a real conversation about Rocky, Iâd be happy to talk. But if youâd rather keep stewing, Iâll leave you to do that alone.â I looked around the room. From the bedroom window, I could see it had turned dark outside. âWhat time is it?â
âItâs about eight.â
âI canât believe I slept that long. What time did you get here?â
âMaybe six.â
I pulled the comforter back over me. âWhy are you here, anyway?â
He reached over to the floor on his side of the bed and pulled up the shoe Iâd left behind. He dangled it in front of me. âCinder bell a?â
I sighed. âThanks.â I took the shoe from him and put it on the floor on my side of the bed. He gave me a mischievous look.
âGuess who I am?â
âIâd say the prince, but he was charming .â
âArenât you sweet , my dear wife.â
For a moment neither of us spoke. I waited for him to say something about Rocky, but he didnât, so the words âdear wifeâ hung in the air between us.
Again I sighed.
Jazz kicked me under the covers. âHey.â
âHey what?â
âI really did come to tell you I was sorry. Will you accept my apology?â
âNo.â
âBut you want me to forgive you your trespasses?â
âI most certainly do!â
He put his chin on my shoulder. âIâm sorry, Bell. I disrespected you, and that was wrong. Will you please forgive me?â
âAs long as you donât do it again.â
He slipped his arms around my waist. âI wouldnât have done that today, but I had a little help from my friend Jack Daniels.â
âI donât think Jack is your friend, Jazz. Listen, I wanted to talk to you aboutââ
âYou wanna tell me what you dreamed?â
I thought about whether I should override his veto. Decided how futile it would be to force him to talk about the drinking when he clearly didnât want to, and proceeded back to what my subconscious mind had dredged up.
I told him about the dream, chills running through me as Irelived it. He listened, nodded. Touched my arm during the hard parts.
His eyes searched mine. âHave you been listening to the news?â
âNo. Not really.â
âEzekiel Thunderâs kid really drowned today. At your boyfriendâs house.â
âI know all about it. I just leftâ¦â
Uh-oh. Suddenly I had myself a situation.
âBell, if you tell me you were withâ¦â
I stayed quiet.
âBellâ¦â
More quiet.
âBell!â
â What? You never said a name.â
âI didnât have to.â
He jumped out of bed, and I saw he had on a white undershirt and his skivvies. Whew! That manâs body made our vows, âwith my body I thee worshipâ sound like a plan . I couldnât stop gaping at him.
âYou were in my bed half naked?â I hoped he didnât hear the longing in my voice.
âYouâre my wife ! Iâm supposed to be in your bed. However , youâre not supposed to be going out withâ¦â
I didnât fill in
