contact with people. I find it kind of strange that Iâm overwhelmed by this kind of reaction, but at the same time, itâs still very flattering.
I am flattered.
This is all fake flattery but it still hits. It still sticks.
And I want that attention like anyone else.
A guy named Jeff sits next to me. He has a drink for me. Now this really does feel like some kind of prostitution thing.
Iâm getting really nervous.
âBe cool,â Jeff says, âfigured you wanted a drink.â
âThanks,â I say, and then, âSo whatâs this party all about?â
Jeff takes a sip from his cup and I sip from mine. The beer is kind of lukewarm and tastes watered downâbottom-of-the-keg beer.
âThe guy thatâs hosting it is being all Great Gatsby about it.â
âHuh?â
âNever read that book?â
I shake my head. âI guess not.â
âHeâs into a girl that he canât get. They have a history. Thatâs what this partyâs about.â
âOh,â I reply. Iâm really not doing well at this. I think itâs because Iâm being forced to hang out with people.
âAnyway,â Jeff starts, âhowâs the demon thing going?â
âItâs... going,â I say in a surprisingly monotone way.
âYeahââhe nodsââI had one too.â
âYou did?â
âYup.â Jeff takes another sip, which sends the signal for me to drink too. âBut I didnât do that Falter thing. Thatâs crazy. Itâs a cool legend, but no, Iâm too claustrophobic for that.â
âHowâd you get it?â
Jeff shrugs. âI just got it one day. Woke up and everything had changed.â
âDamn.â I take a gulp of beer.
âYeah, but I didnât wait around for symptoms to really kick in. I had the exorcism two days after I started being haunted.â
Shit, makes me think about how long Iâve been holding that off.
âBut I guess youâre planning on going through with it?â
Through with what? Do I play dumb? Do I actually know what he means?
Jeffâs like, âIf you do, be ready, man. People do it but itâs basically like saying, âYeah, Iâm ready to die.â Some people think itâll make them transcendent. That thereâs life beyond the body.â
âAnd what do you think?â I said that not because I want to know but because by asking that question, itâll cause Jeff to carry the conversation, and I donât have to say anything.
âMe? Wellââ
But Jon-Jon interrupts us. Someone else, a girl named Melanie, wants to say hi to me.
Jeff shakes my hand. âGood luck with it. With all of it.â
âYeah, thanks,â and then heâs gone, back into the crowd of the party.
Melanie smiles a lot and giggles. She asks me more about running than the demon. She says itâs really, really hot, a big turn-on, dangerous situations like that.
âDo you go to Meadows?â I ask her, just to change the conversation.
âIâm going next year.â
Her hand is on my leg. Oh, man...
âNext... year?â
âIâm almost done with eighth grade,â and then a giggle.
Oh god, hand off crotch now. Now, now, now. âOh, cool,â I say.
She giggles, drinks more, and I want to ask her how she got into the party, but there are always ways. Itâs not like thereâs anyone paying much attention.
Thankfully this train wreck doesnât last long.
Another group shows up and starts lecturing me on the ins and outs of demon hauntings. All sorts of stories about how demons can travel through time from one âuncleanâ place to the next. They talk about religious stuff, the fact that demons are from hell.
I donât know much about it, but they are talking and I donât have to really do anything but occasionally nod my head and say âYeah.â
So
