said Niki, grabbing his hand. âLetâs go back to the party.â
âWhy donât you all clear out,â said Alex. âIâve got to change back into my costumeâso my team can collect the prize for the treasure hunt.â
As they walked back down to the living room, Terryâs head was swimming. He liked surprises. But Alexâs little trick had left him shaken.
I guess I still care about Alex, Terry thought. Otherwise I would have been able to think more clearly when I discovered that dummy in his costume hanging in the closet.
In the living room Murphy and Angela were dancing in the dim glow from the electric candles. The âtreasuresâ were piled up on a table by the fireplace.
âWant some punch?â Terry asked Niki.
âSounds great,â she said. âIâll save you a seat. I need to talk to you.â
Terry brought two cups of punch and then settled in the loveseat next to Niki. She was every bit as beautiful as she had been at the beginning of the evening, but her dark eyes were now narrowed with concern.
âStill upset about what Alex did?â Terry asked her.
âNot really,â said Niki. âItâs something else. Rememberwhen I told you what I saw Justine saying the other day?â
Terry stopped her in surprise. âYou donât still think sheâs up to something?â he said. âJustineâs the only person at the party who hasnât done anything weird.â
âLet me tell you what I found,â Niki went on. âAnd tell me what you think. While you were on the treasure hunt, I went into Justineâs roomââ
âYou were snooping in her room?â
âShe didnât say any part of the house was off-limits,â Niki reminded him. âBesides, I was curious. Terry, she doesnât have any of the normal high school stuff in her roomââ
âWell, why should she?â said Terry. âShe only moved here a few months ago. Besides, sheâs lived all over the world. Sheâs probably more interested in stuff she got in her travels than pennants or school colors.â
âShe doesnât have things from her travels either,â said Niki. âHer room is practically bare, except for one thingââ
She told Terry about the hidden closet and the clothes sheâd found there, along with the picture of Justine and the older man.
âRight,â said Terry. âWell, thereâs a simple explanation. Justineâs a CIA agent and the guyâs a Russian spy.â
âWill you be serious!â said Niki, but she was laughing too. âLook, I know it sounds crazy, but nothing I found in Justineâs room makes any sense. And I also found some prescription bottles made out to Enid Cameron.â
âThatâs her CIA name,â said Terry. âAnd thatâs why sheâs having the party. Sheâs going to ask everyone on the guest list to be a spy.â
âMaybe youâre not so far off,â said Niki. âTerry, I really think Justine leads some kind of double life.â
âWell, maybe she does,â said Terry. âBut so what? If youâre really that bugged about it, ask her. Sheâs a very nice girl, and Iâm sure she wouldnât want anybody to be suspicious ofââ
He broke off as Justine rang her bell again. The dinging came from overhead, and all eyes turned to see Justine standing at the railing on the balcony above the living room, a gold foil-covered box on a table next to her.
âItâs time to award the prize for the treasure hunt,â she said. âAnd Iâm so happy it was such a success. Even ifââshe paused and smiled mischievouslyââthere was a surprise or two even I hadnât planned on.â
Most of the kids applauded and cheered, and Justine made a small bow. âThe prize is special chocolates from Paris,â she said. âWho
