you two can do is fight about it!â She turned to Philip. âMr. Cameron,â she said, âwe all feel terrible about this. But Iâm sure no one here could have done such a terrible thing.â
âSomeone cut the banister,â said Philip, downstairs now, sitting beside his niece. âAnd nearly killed my niece.â
âNow, Uncle Philip,â Justine said placatingly. âWhoever it was couldnât have known Iâd be the one to lean on the railingââ She put an arm around her uncleâs shoulders. âI just feel so bad that itâs spoiled the party. All I ever wanted was for everyone to have a good time.â
Philip stood and stepped away, shaking his head.
âHey, no problem.â Alex was at her side on the couch and slipped his arm around her. âNothingâs spoiled. Itâs a great party.â
âHonest,â chimed in Angela, wrapping Justineâs wrist. âNone of the things that have gone wrong are your fault. Weâre all having a good time.â
âReally?â Justine asked in a tiny voice. âThank you for saying so.â
Now everyone else crowded around Justine, telling her what a great party it was. Justine turned her smile back on in full force.
âThank you all so much,â she said. âMaybe we just need a few minutes to catch our breath and relax, and then weâll get on with the party. After all, there are still plenty more surprises.â She paused and stood up, then glanced around. âIâm going upstairs for a few minutes to get myself together. Iâll see you guys soon.â
âWhatever you say,â Alex said. He had rested one hand lightly on the back of her neck and was looking at her as if no one else in the room existed. Justine whispered something in Alexâs ear. Alex laughed and whispered something back. Then Justine headed upstairs.
How can Justine be with Alex? Terry wondered. Alex was probably the one who cut the banister, or at least knew who did.
âThose two are headed for nothing but trouble,â Niki suddenly said. He saw that she, too, was watching Alex and Justine.
âI know what you mean,â he agreed. âSomeone ought to warn her.â
âWarn her ?â Nikiâs eyes flashed. âSomeone ought to warn him . You may think Iâm wrong, but I just donât trust her.â
âYou just have some kind of silly hunch, thatâs all,â Terry said, surprised at how much he felt like defending Justine. âYou know what, Niki, youâre acting likeyouâreââ He stopped himself before he said something heâd regret.
âIâm acting like Iâm what?â Niki put a hand on Terryâs cheek and pulled his face toward her. Her eyes were blazingâwith anger and something else.
âLike youâreâwellâjealous!â Terry let it out. âNow that Alex is paying more attention to Justine than to you, you seem to think Justine is the Wicked Witch of the West.â
For a moment Niki didnât answer. Her face had gotten very pale. âIs that what you really think?â she said at last.
âLook, I know you donât really care about Alex,â said Terry. âBut how come youâre so down on Justine all of a sudden?â
âIn the first place, I do care about Alex,â Niki said. âAs a friend. And I donât want to see him get hurt. In the second place, thereâs something about Justine that just isnât right. And if she didnât have you on her string, youâd see it yourself. Some very strange things have been happeningââ
âOh, right,â said Terry, stung. âAnd I suppose you think Justine cut through the banister herself.â
âI didnât say that,â said Niki. âI donât know who cut through it. But that doesnât change the fact that Justine is playing some kind of game with all of
