along with them. Got a note here.â He dug into his pocket. âFrom Mr. Vane for a Ms. McCourt.â
âIâm Ms. McCourt.â Frowning, she took the envelope, ripped it open. Inside was a single sheet of letterhead, with a single line of message.
Donât argue.
She opened her mouth, shut it again, then looked back at the driver. She saw two other men now, getting out of the truck to lean against the hood.
âMr. Vane, he said you should give him a call if there was any trouble with this. You want us to get started, or you want us to wait?â
âNo. No, go ahead and get started. Thank you.â
She walked back inside, rubbing the back of her neck as she watched Dana and Malory set another section in place. âThe replacement windows are here.â
âThatâs great. Maybe we should angle this,â Dana suggested.
âThereâs a crew here to install them,â Zoe continued. âBradleyâHomeMakersâincluded installation.â
âBradâs such a sweetie,â Malory commented.
âPays to know the owner.â Dana stepped back, shook her head. âNo, letâs keep this one flush.â
Unsettled, Zoe nudged a sheet of cardboard with her toe. âDonât you think we should pay for it?â
âGift horse, Zoe.â Huffing a bit, Dana muscled the shelf into position. âIâd rather kiss it on the lips than look it in the mouth.â She glanced back, added a quick leer. âOf course, this particular horse would rather you be the one giving out the smoochies.â
âHeâs coming to dinner tonight.â
âGood. Give him a big, wet one.â
âIâm afraid.â
Malory set the box cutter aside. âOf Brad?â
âYes. Of him, of me.â She rubbed a fist between her breasts as if something inside ached a little. âOf whatâs going to happen.â
âOh, honey.â
âI donât know what to do, or what to think. Itâs one thing if itâs just for the fun, the excitement. But Iâm not looking for fun and excitement. Not this kind.â
âYou think he is?â
âI donât know. Well, I mean, sure he is. Heâs a guy. I donât hold that against him. And I think maybe heâs caught up in the romance of the whole thing. How weâre supposed to link up and slay the dragon. But see, I have to think about what happens after that.â
âHe isnât careless with people, if thatâs what youâre worried about.â Serious now, Dana shook her head. âIâve known him most of my life. Heâs a good man, Zoe.â
âI think he is. I can see that he is. But heâs not my man, and heâs not likely to be. Still, if he keeps on the way he is, heâs going to wear me down. Iâm afraid, if that happens, Iâm going to start wishing for something I canât have.â
âI donât think there is anything you canât have,â Malory told her. âWe wouldnât have this place if it wasnât for you.â
âThatâs silly. Just because I found the houseââ
âNot just the house, Zoe. The idea, the vision, the faith.âImpatient, Malory laid a hand on Zoeâs shoulder, gave it a little shake. âYou started this. So I think when you figure out what you really want, youâll figure out the way to get it.â
To keep her hands busy, Zoe picked up the box cutter and started on the next carton. âWere you ever in love, really in love, before Flynn?â
âNo. Iâve been in lust, experienced infatuation, had some very heavy like. But Iâve never loved anyone the way I love Flynn.â
Zoe nodded. âAnd it was always Jordan for you, Dana.â
âWhether I wanted it to be or not, yeah.â
âIâve been in love.â She spoke quietly as she worked. âI loved Simonâs father. I loved him with everything
