CHAPTER 1
An Exciting Phone Call
âI âll get it!â twelve-year-old Jessie Alden called, running for the telephone. She and her brother, six-year-old Benny, had been playing checkers in the living room of their grandfatherâs large house. Jessie reached the phone on the hall table just as it rang for the third time. âHello?â she said, picking it up. âYes, this is the home of James Alden. Iâm his granddaughter.â She paused, listening to what the person on the other end was saying. âReally? How exciting!â Jessie said after a moment.
Benny had followed his sister into the hall. He wondered who was on the telephone, and what he or she had said that was so exciting. He liked solving mysteries, even small ones like this.
âI didnât even know he was going away,â Jessie said into the phone.
âWhoâs going away?â Benny said to himself.
âTo London!â Jessie was saying. âIâll tell him as soon as he gets home. Thank you. Good-bye.â She hung up the phone.
âWho was that? Whatâs so exciting? Whoâs going away?â Benny asked.
âSlow down,â Jessie said, smiling at her little brother. âThat was Grandfatherâs travel agent. She said that his airplane tickets to London are ready.â
âAirplane tickets!â Benny cried with excitement. âBut whereâs London?â
âItâs across the ocean, in a country called England,â Jessie said.
âDid I hear you say Grandfather was going away?â asked their ten-year-old sister, Violet, who had just come downstairs.
