thought the rock â
my
rock â must be it.â
âWhat type of car?â asked Will. âVolkswagen, Triumph, BMW ââ
âIt started with âmâ ⦠I think.â
âMazda, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Morris Minor ââ
Pollo shifted restlessly. âWe probably donât need to know the exact type ââ
âNo, wait!â said Ash. âIt was an animal.â
âJaguar, Beetle, Impala, Mustang ââ
âMustang! Thatâs it!â said Ash. âI knew a mustang was a wild horse, but not a car.â
âMustang Rock!â cried Pollo. âThatâs on the other side of the gorge. They corralled wild horses there in the old days. If those two had an old map of the area and they somehow â¦â She tilted her head side to side, picturing possibilities.
âYou think they got the rocks mixed up?â said Will. âYouâd have to be dense to think an old map would show a rock named after a car.â
Pollo shrugged. âAll we know is that they started the day at Ashâs rock. They got all excited. Then they crossed back over the gorge and ended up down a tunnel on the other side.â
âBut how would they get from Mustang Rock downto the bottom of the gorge?â said Dan.
âThereâs an above-ground cave with a tunnel sloping down,â said Pollo. âItâs been blocked off as long as Iâve known. But I guess it could easily lead to the gorge.â
Pollo leaned forward, her chin in her hands. After a moment she sat up straight. âIt has to be the strongbox they were after,â she announced. âIt must contain something precious. That explains why it was set apart from all the other supplies. And why Mayor Bullockâs got his nose in all this.â
âWouldnât something precious be better hidden?â said Ash.
âMaybe its owner had to leave in a hurry,â said Will.
Dan cleared his throat. âIt couldâve been the bushrangers who made the rockslide ⦠sort of burying it to protect it.â
Pollo slapped Dan on the back. âYouâre thinking like a real investigator!â
âNot really,â said Dan. âOne time Twig buried something in the bush for safekeeping. Only later he forgot where he put it.â
âWell whoever hid this wasnât planning to forget,â said Pollo. âThey made a map.â
âAnd I bet you five bucks,â said Will, âthereâs a big fat cross under âMustang Rockâ.â
Pollo sprang from her rock seat and tossed Will his backpack. She began heading down the trail.
âWhere are you going?â said Dan. âAre we coming too?â
âI hope so!â called Pollo. âWeâre going to Mustang Rock! Iâve got a feeling!â
Dan began hurrying after Pollo.
âIâve got a feeling too!â Will called, hugging his backpack to his chest. âAnd itâs reminding me that those two lovebirds down there were talking about blowing things up!â
Dan stopped, uncertain.
Pollo faced Will, her hands on her hips. âNot till tomorrow morning! They were calling it quits for the day, remember? This is our big chance! If we find out how Curly and Pooky reached the cave â if we find out it really
was
via Mustang Rock â maybe we can get the jump on them somehow! We can save that strongbox and whateverâs in it!â
âCanât we just let them have it?â said Will.
âOur nationâs heritage could be in there, Will Hopkins!â
âOr a load of rusty, musty junk,â said Will. âWe donât know.â
âIt beats me why youâre making such a fuss,â saidPollo. âWeâre going back to town anyway.â She shrugged nonchalantly. âWe just swing by Mustang Rock on the way.â
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Prickled and sweaty, the four emerged from the undergrowth at the base of
