back in, Dare stood, too. âAll done?â
Alani said, âYes,â and started to sit by Jackson again.
He was just reaching for her when Dare caught her elbow. âGreat. Now itâs my turn.â
Frustration pushed Jackson over the edge. He shot to his feet. âThis is bullshit!â He did not want Dare and Trace filling her head with reasons to run from him. âLetâs roll credits on the drama already.â
At his raised voice, Traceâs muscles bunched up. âWatch your mouth in front of my sister.â
âSheâs not a damn china doll.â
Alani started to speak, but Trace didnât give her a chance. âYouâll treat her with respect.â
Jackson stiffened. He wasnât going to explain himself to her brother. What was between them was privateâand he wanted to get back to it, damn it. But he wouldnât keep putting up with Traceâs animosity, either. âYou think I donât?â
Dare tugged Alani along. âLetâs leave them to it, hon, okay?â
And Alani, left with little choice in the matter, again walked away.
âThis is insane.â Jackson dropped back down on thecouch and glared at Trace. âYou two will wear her out with all this covert chitchat, back-and-forth nonsense.â
âYouâll both survive.â
Jackson wasnât at all sure about that. If they talked Alani into keeping her distance from him, heâd detonate. Trying to hide his tension, Jackson said more calmly, âWhat the hell did you say to her, anyway? And why couldnât you say it right here in the comfort of her living room?â
Pensive, silent, Trace leaned against the wall.
Jackson stewed until he couldnât hold it in. âAnd what the hell does Dare have to do with anything? Heâs not even her damn brother.â
Eyes narrowing, Trace suffered him in silence.
With nothing more to do, and Trace being a bore, Jackson poured himself another cup of coffee.
He had just taken a sip when Trace said, âI assume you havenât told her everything.â
What the hell could he tell her when he didnât remember even a smidge of the night? âWhatâs that?â
Pushing away from the wall, Trace stood beside the chair Dare had vacated. âThere are things about you, Jackson, added responsibilities that Alaniâs unaware of. Or have you told her about Arizona?â Oh. That. Shit. âNot yet, no.â
âI didnât think so.â
As always when discussing Arizona, heat crawled up his neck. Half under his breath, Jackson said, âHavenât really had much chance for talking, not with you two hanging around, making her think the world is coming to an end.â And besides, what woman would understand about Arizona? He sure as hell didnât want to shoot himself in the foot this early.
âIf thatâs your way of saying Iâm overreacting, Alani isused to my idea of caution. Sheâd think something more was wrong if I acted any other way.â
Maybe he had a point. âIf you say so.â
âTell her about Arizona, or I will.â
That challenge couldnât go unanswered. Jackson set the cup down with a clatter. âItâs my business, Trace.â And besides, Trace might think he knew everything about it, but he didnât. Not by a long shot.
âWhen youâre sleeping with my sister, it becomes my business.â
Jackson locked his back teeth, but heâd never taken well to ultimatums. âArizona has nothing to do with her.â
âIf you care about her, then Arizona has plenty to do with her.â Trace crossed his arms over his chest and widened his stance. âAnd if you donât care, then Iâm telling you right now, leave her the hell alone.â
Â
H EARING RAISED VOICES in the living room left Alani uneasy. She tried to rush back in, but Dare didnât let her.
He caught one of her hands in both of
