her. I brushed her hair and put a bunch of colorful, pretty clips in it, and then I took her clawlike hands and straightened her fingers out one by one so I could cut her nails and polish them up real nice.
The whole time I worked on Mama I talked to her just like she could understand everything I was saying. âRemember the last time I came to see you and I told you I was going down to Texas? Well, I went and it was wild as hell, Mama,â I told her. âI acted a pure fool down there, and them country folks loved me so much they want me to come back again. But this time,â I said, âtheyâre gonna be paying me a whole lot better.â
Mama started making that funny noise again. Like she was crying. Her crooked hands shot up in the air and a look of fright rose in her eyes.
âDonât worry.â I hugged her and comforted her through her moans. âIâma tell them nurses they better not let Aunt Bibby back up in here no more, okay? If she brings her big ass around here again Iâma roll up in Taft and wear her out, for real!â
Mama cried and tried to reach out for me. âYou gonna be okay,â I told her. âTexas ainât that far, you know. Iâll be back in a couple of weeks, okay?â I kissed her hands and then her forehead. âPeaches said heâs gonna check on you while Iâm gone, and if you need me, Mama, heâll call me, okay?â
I kissed her again, and then I got up outta that stuffy little room in a hurry because I didnât want her to see me crying. I got in the car with Peaches and slammed the door, and I didnât say a word all the way back to Harlem. All I could do was lean against the car window with tears running from my eyes, and instead of babying me like he usually did, Peaches gave me my peace and let me have my space.
When we pulled up on the block and he parked the ride, I turned to him and swallowed hard. âPeaches,â I said softly, âyou gonna see about Mama while Iâm gone, ainât you? You gonna look out for her, right?â
He nodded and turned his hand over and wiped away my tears with his big old ashy knuckle. âYou damn right Iâma look out for her, Mink. And Iâll kick all of them muthafuckasâ asses up in there if they donât treat her right too.â
âOkay, thanks,â I said, feeling some kinda way inside. Here I was about to jet my money-grubbing ass outta town and get my hustle on by pretending to be somebody elseâs damn daughter while my own mama was layinâ up in a nursing home all by herself for twenty-four hours a day. âOne day Iâma get my mama up outta there,â I swore under my breath. I knew I sounded stupid, like a little kid who still believed in fairy tales, but I couldnât help it. âHell yeah. One day Iâma stack enough bank to set my mama up lovely so she can live the rest of her life around people who gonâ treat her right.â
Peaches touched my arm, then leaned over and kissed me on my forehead. âI believe you, Madame Mink. Word up. I believe you.â
CHAPTER 9
I t was black as midnight when we left New York, but by the time the plane zipped to about a million other cities and then touched down at DFW International Airport, the sun was rising high in the summer sky. The last time me and Bunni had rolled in to Dallas weâd been slumming so hard we barely had enough ends to scrape together to pay for a taxi, but when we walked out of the terminal this time a big, bronco-busting Texas-sized truck was waiting outside for us and my play-uncle Suge Dominion was posted up and leaning against the bumper.
Superior âSugeâ Dominion was a six-foot-five big chocolate banga! This nig had my mouth wide open and my pussy moist as fuck. He was Viceroyâs smooth, criminal-minded younger brother, and his gutter game was all day long and all night strong. Suge was one of them real tall and
