bookshelves and the closet.â
âI knew it! What could you see?â
âNot much. The hall runs parallel to the bookshelves and stops at what Iâm guessing are a set of stairs. I couldnât really see down that far. At the other end of the hallâbehind the leftmost bookshelfâthere was some type of door. Maybe one of the bookshelves slides out of the way. Even if we canât open it, we can always drop through the ceiling.â
I could feel my heart palpitating.
âOh, and I couldnât remove the floor stone from the basement.â
âI totally forgot about that,â I admitted. âWe can dig it up later. I think weâve got ourselves a treasure hunt.â
âSo youâre going to buy it?â he asked as our waitress arrived with the first three of his six plates.
âAre you kidding? Thereâs no question.â
âFifty-fifty on any find, right?â
âAbsolutely.â
âWell in that case, how quickly can we get the keys?â
âGood question. Iâll have to call Regina.â
While Stevenâs final plates arrived, I punched in Reginaâs number on my cell and stepped outside next to a couple of newspaper vending machines on Colorado Boulevard. Regina picked up on the third ring.
âHi Regina. Well, everything looks good.â
âOf course. Itâs a great house!â
A homeless man walked up to the vending machine containing one of the triple-X rags and started cursing at the spread-eagle-legged woman on the front page.
âExcuse me?â Regina prompted.
âSorry, Iâm standing outside a restaurant and itâs a bit noisy. Regina, how soon can I get the keys?â
A pause. âAlex, usually we wait until after escrow before the buyer gets ownership of the house. So, itâll be a little under a month.â
âIs there any way I can move in earlier? Iâd like to move in as soon as possible.â
âIâll have to talk with the estate trustee.â She paused. âYou see, there are legal liabilities with this type of thing.â
âIâd appreciate it if you could chat with them. Iâd be happy to pay rent if that helps. I really need to vacate my current house.â
âIâll call them and get back to you.â
âIâd appreciate it.â
A minute later I sat back down in the booth. My food still hadnât arrived. I scanned the room for the waitress.
âI just asked herâitâll be here in a minute,â Steven said. âSo?â
âSheâs going to check with the seller. Iâm betting we can get the keys within a few days.â
My pocket began to vibrate. I snatched the phone and clicked the talk button.
âHi, Regina. What did the seller say?â
âWhoâs Regina?â
âOh. Hey, Tom. Sorry about that. Reginaâs a real estate broker. I thought you were her.â
âA broker? Are you buying a new place?â
âSomething like that. Iâll fill you in next time we hang. Anyway, whatâs up?â
âDudeâI just wanted to call and thank you for the tickets. Thatâs unbelievable. How the hell did you score second-row Lakers season tickets?â
âI know a friend who knows a friend. Iâm glad you like them.â
âOne sec, itâs going to be a bit noisy. I just got home.â I heard a garage door lowering in the background and a bunch of keys jangling.
âOne minute,â he continued, âlet me unlock â¦â I heard the door open, then a pause. âOh shit. What the fuck?â
âWhat happened?â
âHoly shitâour place has been totally ransacked.â A pause. âGennady?â he yelled. âGennady?â
âJesus. Are you okay?â
âIâm not sure. They might still be here. Alex, Iâll call you back.â
The call cut out.
âWas that Tom Chien from your startup?â Steven
