Chapter One
H onk! Honk!
A clown sitting on a huge tricycle honked his horn. Then he handed Eric Shelton a flyer.
âThank you,â Eric said.
Someone dressed in a large frog costume handed him another flyer.
âThank you,â Eric said to the frog.
âRibbit. Ribbit,â the frog answered.
âPut your hands in your pockets,â Cam told Eric. âIf you donât people will keep giving you papers.â
Cam Jansen and her friend Eric Shelton were walking through the Hamilton shopping mall. It was a sale day, and the mall was crowded.
âListen to this,â Eric said. He read from one of the flyers. âToday only! Big sale at Jasonâs Sneaker Palace. Youâll run faster in Jasonâs sneakers.â
Then Eric read from the second flyer. âToday only! Free sprinkles, nuts, and syrup on any two-scoop ice cream cone at Mama Minnieâs Sweet Shop.â
âI get interesting things in the mail, not at the mall,â Cam said. She gave Eric a card. âListen to what Aunt Molly sent to me.â
Cam closed her eyes and said, â Click. â Cam always says â Click â when she wants to remember something.
Cam recited the poem that was printed on the card:
âI love giraffes and elephants,
chickens, ducks, and geese,
but not as much as I love
my eight-year-old niece.
Happy Birthday.â
âThatâs silly,â Eric said. âYouâre not eight years old. Youâre ten.â
Cam opened her eyes and said, âAnd itâs not my birthday. That was four months ago.â
Cam smiled, and said, âAunt Molly is nice but very forgetful.â
Cam closed her eyes again and told Eric, âNow
