partly because she wanted to shield herself against whatever God was trying to do with her. âI think God wants me to spend some time in Hope Springs while youâre in Haiti . . .â She wiped a few tears. âHelping Janelle take care of Grandma Geri.â
âWow.â Lindell looked aside, presumably processing it himself.
âBut I know it wouldnât work,â she quickly added. âWe canât just leave our home for weeks at a time. Too much to look afterâbills, home maintenance. I mean, what if a pipe bursts when itâs cold or a bird gets stuck in the chimneyâthat happened to the Nelsons, you know. Somebody needs to be there.â
Lindell brought her into his arms again. âSteph, I have watched God do amazing things in your heart in the two years weâve been married.â He leaned back to look in her eyes. âYou think youâre selfish now? Do you remember how you used to be?â
The tears had subsided, so she could easily roll her eyes at him.
âIâm trying to encourage you, babe. Youâve come a long way. We both have. I would never have considered a medical mission trip two years ago.â He took her hand and walked with her. âI think itâs exciting. You told me youâve been praying to have a servantâs heart. Sounds like God wants to take you to servant school.â
âYou didnât answer my concerns, though. What about our house?â
Lindell almost chuckled. âReally, Steph? How much family do we have nearby to check on things for us? And we can pay bills online. The last thing Iâm worried about is the house.â
âWell, Janelle might not want me here. I might just get in the way.â
âTrue.â Lindell stifled a smile. âYouâd be remiss if you didnât ask to be sure.â
âAnd Iâd miss my family.â
He nodded. âYes, you will. And youâll get to know the family thatâs here better.â He squeezed her hand. âYouâre not joining the army. Itâs only a few weeks.â
âHmph. Itâs kinda like joining the army. Servant school boot camp.â
He laughed. âThat might be true.â He stopped and looked at her. âNot like you have to decide this minute. Letâs pray, and whatever you decide, you decide. God can find a way to take you through servant school boot camp in St. Louis just as well as in Hope Springs.â
That made her feel better, like her whole life didnât hinge on this one decision. She stared into the distance.
âWhat?â Lindell said.
âI donât know . . . My thoughts about what I should do keep changing, depending on whether Iâm focused on myself or my grandmother.â She sighed. âIf you ask me, boot camp already started.â
CHAPTER NINE
Tuesday, December 29
T odd, help me here.â Becca blew out a soft sigh, taking a stab at patience, which was dwindling fast. She swiveled from her computer screen to face him fully. âYouâre telling me your company is about to lay off a lot of people in your department but you wonât be among them.â
âYes. My level is safe for now.â
âYet this is your confirmation that we should leave life as we know it and move to Hope Springs? You canât be serious.â
Theyâd been debating this since the road trip home. Toddâs meeting with the elders had made an impression and swayed him to at least begin thinking seriously about their proposition. Every day he seemed to be leaning more in favor of the move. But sheâd been hanging her hopes on one thing he said heâd needâreal confirmation. Given how crazy this notion was, sheâd been sure he wouldnât get it.
âI really think so, Bec.â He paced in front of her, a distressing sign, since it meant his wheels were turning. âWhen they told me about the layoffs today, it just clicked.â He
