hear her TV click off. âThis all happened at Bible study? Did it ever occur to you people to actually study the Bible at these events?â
âSo I need to know exactly what Seth said to you, Brea. Do you really think heâs going to ask me to marry him?â
âHe drove Arin home?â
âShe asked him to.â
âSometimes your boyfriend drives me crazy. We should practice saying ânoâ with him before this goes any farther. Thereâs nice and thereâs clueless, and he is entering the realm of clueless.â
âRegardless, he took her home. Now what?â
âAshley, personally, I think heâs going to ask you. No, Iâm sure of it. He asked both John and me to be there, and said he had something he wanted to share with all of us. What else could it be? This thing with Arin is probably his last hoorah, like a shout that heâs still in-dependent. Why else would he ask us all there?â
âWho knows with Seth? The Lord of the Rings has a new installment? Thereâs a big Xbox online event? You can never be too sure with my beloved.â
âJust tell him that his days with Arin are over. If heâs going to ask you to marry him, he should have no problem with that promise.â
âIâm not going to police him, Brea. If he wants to spend time with Arin, itâs better to know now. But she just wants to feed her ego, and heâll end up nursing his wounds.â
âThis is not right, Ash! Heâs not just a friend anymore. Heâs supposed to be somebody who understands exactly how you feel. Heâs been your boyfriend, your Christian boyfriend, for nine months. Would you accept this behavior if you were married?â
âHeck no.â
âThen start being the businesswoman I know you are and grow a brain.â I hear the TV click back on. â Oooh, itâs getting good. Call me back.â She hangs up on me, and the phone immediately starts to beep.
âHello?â
âAshley, itâs me.â
âSeth! Howâs Arin? Is she home safely?â
âShe doesnât really have a home. Sheâs staying with different friends. I think she was looking for a night on my couch.â
âAnd?â
âAnd I told her I had a girlfriend. Sheesh, Ashley.â
Oh yeah, Iâm the dumb one . âSo youâre home now?â
âYeah, Iâm missing you. I feel like I barely got to see you tonight, and itâs been too long.â His emotion doesnât stir me like usual. Iâm hurt. Maybe itâs childish, but Iâm still hurt.
âIf you could go on any vacation, where would it be?â I ask, fishing for ideas. Maybe my honeymoon daydream was on the money.
âI donât know, maybe on a houseboat, or cross-country in an RV.â
âAn RV?â Tell me my supposed soul mate did not say the initials that have come to signify camping with a television set. âYou donât maybe want to go to Hawaii or a beach somewhere? Or a spa?â
He laughs. âWhat would I do at a spa? I donât want some guy touching me. Gross.â
Okay, no spa. I can deal with that. âWhat about a cruise? Thatâs kind of like RVing.â
âAre you going on vacation, Ash?â
Sigh. âNo, just daydreaming, I guess.â
âI just wanted to let you know I was home, and that Iâll see you Saturday for your bossâs thing.â
âIâm trying to get out of that. Of course, I still want to see you.â
âWhy?â He laughs. âI mean why are you trying to get out of it, not why do you want to see me.â
Um, I think Hans wants my bod. âI just donât want to set a precedent that I do things socially with my boss, thatâs all.â The truth overtakes me. âAnd I think he wants me. You know, in that way.â
Seth is quiet.
âDid you hear me?â
âWhat makes you think
