Then just brush his lips with the nipple. He’ll do the rest.”
Wyatt followed her suggestion. Mikey latched on to the rubber nipple as though it was the real thing. He drank with small gulping sounds, his eyes closing with pleasure. “Ease him off a little,” Leigh cautioned. “You’ve seen what can happen if he drinks too fast. That’s it....”
She was smiling up at him, the night-light soft on her face. Wyatt cursed under his breath. Damn it, but she was beautiful.
“It’s a shame you don’t have children of your own,” he said, making conversation. “You strike me as a natural.”
“Maybe someday.” She glanced down at her clasped hands. “Wyatt, what happened tonight...I’m aware that I made the first move. And I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it. But it wasn’t very smart—especially with Chloe in the house.”
Wyatt nodded, reluctant to speak and startle Mikey, now a warm, sleepy bundle of contentment in his arms.
“We can’t be sneaking around behind her back, hoping she won’t overhear us or walk in on us,” Leigh continued. “My main reason for being here is to give Mikey a loving start, and to help Chloe any way I can. None of that will work if she can’t trust me.”
“So what about your so-called crush?”
“Oh, it’s still there.” She gave him a hint of a smile. “But it might have to wait for a better time. I’ve been burned before, and I know better than to think either one of us is looking for a serious relationship. We had a good time, and I certainly wouldn’t mind a return engagement. But first things first.”
Wyatt looked down at his sleeping grandson. Mikey’s eyes were closed, his lashes golden feather spikes against his rosy cheeks. Leigh was right. What mattered most was doing the right thing for Chloe and for this precious new life. Other concerns could wait.
But not forever. True, after doing the marriage thing once, Wyatt knew he wasn’t husband material, or even long-term boyfriend material. But the chemistry with Leigh was too delicious to put on hold for long. He meant to get her to himself—and he wasn’t a patient man.

Leigh woke to the sound of a car backing down the drive. She flew to the window to see the Bentley swing onto the road and disappear behind the trees. She glanced at the clock. Six-thirty, not even sunup. Did Wyatt have pressing business this early or was he running away from pressures on the home front?
After feeding Mikey last night, he’d made his excuses and gone downstairs. She’d known better than to go after him. He’d had an emotional day and so had she. And they could hardly spend the night together with Chloe in the house. His distance from her had only been sensible. But today was different. Wyatt had gone off and left her to deal with the teen on her own—a whole new set of challenges.
Mikey was awake in the nursery making little cooing noises in his crib. Flinging on her robe, she hurried through the connecting doorway. His eyes brightened as she leaned over to pick him up. “Hello, big boy.” She kissed the soft curve of his neck, inhaling the sweet baby aroma she’d already come to love. His diaper was soaked. He’d need changing and sponging before she went downstairs. Putting him back in the crib she pulled on her jeans and a fresh shirt. By the time she’d brushed her teeth and hair he was crying. Probably hungry. Maybe she should feed him first, then get him cleaned up.
Leigh was beginning to understand why some new mothers looked so frazzled. She felt like a wreck, and she hadn’t even given birth.
The soggy diaper couldn’t wait. She used a wipe on his bottom, being careful to keep his cord dry, and taped a fresh disposable into place. That done, she zipped him into dry pajamas, put him in his carrier and took him down to the kitchen. He was fussing and sucking on his fist. The poor little guy was really hungry.
She put a bottle in hot water and snuggled him while she waited. When she had a
